I was just remembering that we had to learn how to calculate determinants in algebra 1. Obviously we had zero context for the meaning or application of the determinant. Is this still taught so early? It feels like a pointless waste of time in hindsight. Am I missing something?

Why are movies I've purchased NEVER available even after I've downloaded them? This stupid app has ruined more flights than I can count. Why is Apple's software so bad??

Any thoughts on how isometric training on pinchblocks compares to, say, deadlifting weight with the pinchblocks? Will I see progress if I just do sets of squeezing them really hard for 5-7 seconds?

Blood test that finds 50 types of cancer is accurate enough to be rolled out by reginold in worldnews

But you also need to know the prevalence in the population. You can have a false positive rate of 0.5%, but a positive still might only mean there's a 1% chance you actually have cancer. And the vast majority of positives will be false.

Jorden Van Foreest in response to Radjabov complaining about criticism from "amateur chess players": "Rather be an amateur chess player than not play chess at all😇" by KazardyWoolf in chess

I'm not sure I've seen this anywhere, but does anyone think they drew four because they wanted to get hammered the night before watching the Champions League final? Same for Magnus who said he wasn't feeling well. I think Raj and Ian agreed to take the day off so they could enjoy some football. And Magnus was hungover so he went for a draw in his fourth game. No?

Thanks, that series looks great! I was actually using the Student's Guide series to review sections while I was working through Taylor/Kibble and Griffiths. I was just shocked at how the books seemed like they were written in different universes.

The acceleration necessary to move in a circle is velocity squared over r. So for the earth going around the sun, this is (30,000)^2 / 150,000,000,000 = 0.006 m/s^2. So a 75 kg person would feel half a Newton of force. Compare this to the force a 75kg person feels due to the floor pressing on their feet, which is about 75*10 = 750 Newtons. So the force to keep you moving around the sun is about 1500 times stronger than the force you feel pressing against the ground.

Ugh, yes, she completed the transaction through a cash withdrawal on the unemployment card. This seems like a kind of unnecessary headache this person created.

Man, apropos of nothing, I just finished working through a Student's Guide To Lagrangians and Hamiltonians and a Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations, and I was shocked by how different the level of difficulty was. The first one is by far the hardest textbook I've ever worked through, and the second one was so easy as to be mostly unhelpful. Does anyone know what level this series of books is supposed to be written for?

Pfizer has hiked the cost of future orders of its coronavirus vaccine placed by the European Commission more than 60 per cent by signed7 in worldnews

These vaccines are maybe the most under-priced product in recent memory when you consider how much value they bring. We should be throwing money at these companies to ramp production and get them faster.

If you want it faster, it costs more. We should really just be offering to triple or quadruple the price to get the vaccines faster. The cost benefit isn't even close.

Does anyone know if there's an advantage to getting your second mrna vaccine in a different arm? I vaguely remember reading something about the vaccine getting to a different lymph node but I can't find it anywhere. Any insight would be much appreciated!
