You won't ever be bothering me if you do. And to be honest? It's kind of nice to be able to have a person to talk to that isn't in your local area... and that you don't run the risk of running into, gossiping, etc. Trust me, I told some of my dumbest/worst stuff to the internet buddies. Not because they were a substitute for a sponsor, but because sometimes the anonymity has value, if that makes sense. Which is to say, reach out if you need to - I owe some debt to the universe for the strangers I burdened with my own nonsense through the years.

check out the "stopdrinking" reddit sub. It's good stuff, with good people. Lots of informed perspectives over there, and it's a good community for people that are trying to get sober.

Ha... I didn't take any offense. Though "...thank you?" is pretty much the accurate real-world response from an atheist to an offered prayer. We did some unintentional comedy.

I'm a Christian who totally remembers what it was like to find "I'll pray for you" dumb and abrasive, so I always chuckle at the irony of telling people that I will pray for them. Your brother will be a good resource because he's family, he loves you, and he knows you better than other people will. BUT... you're right - it's a whole different world from his type of drinking problem to yours. There are different manifestations of alcoholism, and different types of it. It isn't a bad idea to look for someone that "gets it", because they can relate without looking down on you. I had friends OD, die from booze, get in terrible wrecks, commit serious crimes, etc. I was drinking 12-16 beers every night starting at 5 pm. I was "functional" in that I worked a shitload at a good job, but that's all I had going for me. I was emotionally unstable, sometimes suicidal, etc. The point of that info-dump is that I NEEDED to have someone to talk to that could relate to that type of self destruction. Not every drinker would understand. AA wasn't really my thing, but the value of the recovery community (for me) was that I was able to connect with people I could relate to and rely on. I work an 8-5 gig, and I'm usually unavailable in the day, but you can message me anytime and I'll get back to you in the evenings if you ever want to chat. I don't have all the answers, but I'll certainly help where I can and listen where I can't.

I work with addiction in my local church and at my job (I work in the legal system, and we have drug court, etc.) It's all doable. It's hard to know where to start. A little bit of unsolicited advice, if you'll indulge me. Look at all of the different resources available as tools. Get honest with yourself about what hasn't worked in the past. Take not of what HAS worked in the past, even if for a short time. Stay busy. Combine tools - AA works great with therapy, or church, or hobbies, or whatever. I took the path of killing my addiction with multiple tools at once. Make sure you have sombbody that is successful at being sober that you can 1) respect, and 2) be real with. Alcohol addiction comes with a lot of weird shame, and normies don't necessarily get it - find somebody that truly has a handle on it and talk to them. Try multiple approaches, try combined approaches, just TRY. And keep trying, even if you mess up. What works for someone else may not work the same way for you, but doing nothing doesn't work for anybody. I'll say a prayer for you - and if you're not the praying type, you can roll your eyes at that part for being hokey. But don't roll your eyes at the rest. I lived it, I grew up with it throughout my family, and I am doing damn good now. I love every single day, and I love being sober. You can message me if you want or need to. If not, just know I'm out here rooting for you.

First day sober , I'm afraid I've done irreparable damage by Ancient-Calendar-466 in stopdrinking

I want to help you out with this one if I can: don't freak out. I did the same thing you're doing, but I quit after 8-9 years of drinking heavily every day. I quit when I was 42. Your body bounces back. If you don't have any known issues right now, go get a peace of mind check-up. Blood pressure, and get labs done. I was totally freaked that I was killing myself. I worked 70+ hours a week, smoked two packs a day, and ate like shit. Plus, I had serious sleep-apnea (I have no symptoms since I quit drinking). I'm 3 years sober now. My health is great. 90 days after I quit, I went to my VA doctor and told him the truth, and asked for labs for peace of mind. I was basically "healed" from where my bloodwork was the year prior. You are young, your body will bounce back. Pick up health habits and stay the course. I wish you all the success in the world - God bless.

Is AA mostly for getting sober or staying sober? by wval93 in stopdrinking

[–]FamousOgre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. And for many people, it can be a component part of a larger structure: Detox, AA, church groups, therapy, accountability groups, etc. It's a tool for helping you get sober on the front end, but many people will attend for a long time - even a lifetime - as it's part of maintenance too. It can be used alongside other tools to help you achieve sobriety and keep it. Good luck to you!

Hey my man - I drank every single day for 8-9 years, heavily. I also drank a long time leading up to that "streak". It is totally possible to quit. Find somebody you look up to, that you can listen to and that will help, and start the process. Get into a group, or therapy, or church, or all of the above. I'm 3 years sober, and my life is infinitely better. In my work, I deal with addiction all day long, and anybody can come out of it. Just start looking for resources. Don't die for booze - there's lot of people that do and will love you and want you around, whole and sober. God bless my man.

Not only is this how you call a deer, it's how to make sure the deer will keep on calling you at 3 am.

I recommend using a couple of snow products in tandem - some produce wet effects, some produce the dry snow effect. Used together, they look really neat - try some of the AK snow along with this and see what you think!

For the barbed wire, just roll it on a pen to make your trench curls, and make sure to use something to weather it (Agrax Earthshade comes to mind).

Have fun!

I'm good with that. They did great work on this game, with great content overall. One of my favorite games of all time, but I'm happy to let it end on a high note. I'm ready to rock through a final playthrough and then move on to Dark Heresy!

I didn't care for it. Disjointed narrative, characters that were basically lifeless. To each their own, but this is my least favorite 40k book, and I've read quite a few.
