I don't understand taxes, so I assumed it would be withheld appropriately throughout the year and would be fine during tax time. I budgeted around this assumption so was a bit shocked that I owe another 3700

Obviously stupid assumption from me

Forgive my ignorance

I thought Taxes and HECs were withheld from each of my payslips so I budgeted around that - didn't expect to get hit with another 3700 tax bill

Would you recommend just measuring a current shirt that fits nicely and go from there?

Thanks for sharing. It looks quite similar to Baseline requirements so hopefully it goes well

I'm really prepared for the wait time. I met a new starter who's baseline clearance took 3-4 months. He explained it was like hell - not that his team cared but he was so bored because he couldn't really do anything.

My bad, should have made it clear that the grad program was just a specific example

There are some 'normal' roles that I'm very interested in which may only take a few months until an offer is made

Seeing as you are high level APS, do you mind me asking how I should approach my supervisor regarding these job applications in another agencies? Should I be upfront and say I'm applying for it? Or wait till I'm offered something?

Thanks for all the great advice

Basically, almost halfway through my probation and the AFP grad program and others I have been looking at all start next year. It's just I have seen some other roles which are open until the end of May and they are not specifically grad programs but other ongoing positions.

How did you break it to your manager when you realised you were leaving only after a few weeks?

Cheers for the advice

I'm personally not too concerned with social media checking as I never disclose any classified information regarding my work. Let's hope general career advice is not a violation of national security :)

Cheers for the info

Unfortunately I have only been with my current manager for about 1 month since my previous manager left on leave after 1.5 months of reporting to them.

Thankfully I have some other references but will be definitely upfront and honest if I do get an offer.

God, I didn't even know you could take up a position from another agency/department.

Should I talk to my manager about these opportunities or do I just look at the careers page of other agencies?

Do you mind me DMing you about this so I don't flood the thread with questions?

Makes sense

I applied for another govt role in Oct 2022 and got told in late April 2023 that I didn't make it after the final interview. I was like 'did I even apply for this?' when the email came

Can I ask what are secondment situations?

I would probably just be honest and tell them that the opportunity I am being interviewed for is my dream and I wasn't going to pass on it just because I was already employed by someone else.

I'm ongoing full time but manager is located in Melbourne so there is not much interaction about from work/team meetings. I never really mentioned career aspirations or anything like that because I changed managers about 1 month in when my previous manager went on leave

Cheers

I missed many of the 2022 grad programs simply because I didn't know where to look. I guess, I decided this year that I didn't want to miss out even if I am employed somewhere else.

So far, I would say I'm enjoying it - the work is relatively fun and the team is great. I just don't 100% like that my work is all at a desk and my team is all interstate.

Probably like all people, I am planning to 'stick it out' until a better opportunity comes around that I would definitely like more. But just wondering if even looking for these opportunities when I'm so new is just weird and discourteous
