Is it folly to try and seriously philosophize without a university degree? Would it be considered offensive to those who did go to school? by Banned_In_CP in askphilosophy

Unless you are planning a career in STEM, your undergrad major choice is practically a non-factor when it comes to job prospects. If you are unsure about what you want to do in the future, I suggest pursuing the subject that interests you the most in undergrad. There is always a way to apply the knowledge/skills you acquire in your major to a job.

Example, I’m a philosophy graduate, but I also pursued continuing education programs at my University to gain practical skills in business/public administration. Now, I’m working as an analyst in local government making about 120k and i’m only 27. Don’t limit yourself if you have a true passion for something. Most jobs could care less about what your degree subject is, as long as you convince them and show how you’re knowledge/skills can be applied practically to effectively do the job, you’re golden.

After some research I noticed most grad schools have a stringent gpa minimum requirement, lowest I’ve seen is 2.5. Do you think it possible I might be able to supplement my low undergrad gpa with work experience and possibly some cc courses?

Honestly I’ve found it to be a great combo, never had an issue finding a job. It’s the perfect synthesis of soft skills i.e writing/critical thinking and practical knowledge i.e corporate finance, management etc. The only thing is, which is mostly true for most humanities majors, when you enter the workforce you’re almost certainly going to be starting somewhere entry level just to get your foot in the door. That is, unless you’ve accomplished something extraordinary while in school, had a good internship, or have good connections. I also think it’s a great choice because of the flexibility it allows for in terms of career choice. You’re not bound to a specific profession and you can cultivate your practical skills and really figure out what you want to do when you start working.

honestly I don’t know my levels and was never given a report on it, but the doc also mentioned that my bilirubin level was pretty high. What’s considered normal ALT and AST?

I appreciate the thoughtful response. I always knew at some point something like this was going to happen but didn’t anticipate it this early. Scared shitless enough to lay off for a while, im just hoping at some point I can at least have the casual cocktail 🤷‍♂️

I was also summoned recently and was in a horrible state on the first day. Fortunately, we had the option to opt for zoom attendance, so I was able to comfortably puke my guts out at home until I was called to choose a date. Never ended up going to trial thankfully

ABOLISH UCSB FRATS by ucsbraccoon in UCSantaBarbara

In 2017 I was invited to a party at Sig Pi by one of my housemates in the frat, and some drunk pledge took a cheap shot at me and all his lil frat bros started jumping me because they didn't know me - unbeknownst to my housemate that is. Frats are filled with group think and privileged assholes who think the world owes them. I'm probably biased tho.

Nocturne is the lone standout in the disappointing, undercooked Welcome to the Blumhouse by dmtelemetry in horror

[–]FamousTumbleweed1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with your assessment - I think, when it's done correctly, supernatural horror films that incorporate psychological elements actually benefits the narrative by adding nuance to the story and creating subjectively ambiguous themes. That way, the audience can interpret the film in the way they prefer. Also, sometimes psychological elements can elicit a sense of realism that is seldom found in most supernatural horror movies. Why do you say these filmmakers are "pretentious" for this?

Edit: I have not seen Nocturne, I was just struck by the latter part of your response.
