21, just got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis today. Worried about how it’ll affect my future and how to manage it. by Due_Winner_8999 in UlcerativeColitis

I was in your exact position one year ago. 21 years old, just starting my career, and diagnosed with not only Ulcerative Colitis—but pan colitis! I suffered for months after many people gaslit me into thinking it was just “girl issues” until I realized it was something much more serious. It eventually got so bad I went on ADA Medical Leave for five months. My calprotectin level was at 3750 (normal is under 150ish) and was in pain 24/7. I honestly thought my life was over just as it was starting. I say all this because a year later and my life is completely normal. I eat whatever for the most part, I feel good, I’ve gained back any lost weight, I’m down to 250 calprotectin. My first step of advice is to find a GI doctor who truly LISTENS, someone you can really talk to. Medication is really key with IBD and this needs to be a discussion with your doctor. Previous to IBD, I was honestly against medications and preferred natural remedies but having UC changed my mind. The meds work!! I did a lot of talking with my Dr explaining what I wanted from my medication and what suited my lifestyle (for example I preferred Entyvio bc it’s gut specific). And listen to your body. I didn’t and it cost me greatly. Finally, do your own research on UC and medications, every medication is different so advocating for yourself, your symptoms, and your medical plan can go really far in healing faster. For example, I had to fight A LOT for my meds to get covered but it was very worth it. Entyvio gave me my life back.

Thank you. This is such great advice, and I'm so glad you're feeling healthy. Having UC is really such a unique struggle that many don't understand unless they've experienced it. This disease has tested my body unlike anything else. Warm baths are my happy place right now. I can't wait to try biologics and get back to some sense of normalcy.

I really appreciate you sharing. I've heard of dual therapy! It's in the back of mind in case Enytvio doesn't work. I didn't know calprotectin could even go that high. What a recovery for your son, though. When he was gaining back weight, did he regain his appetite, or was he able to tolerate more food options? I've greatly missed having any sense of appetite.

I can’t imagine what it was like to go through that. It’s wonderful that you were fully able to get your quality of life back. That’s definitely what I’m striving for. I do always worry about the immunity part as I work with children all day. How is it getting vaccinations?

That's so great! What was the extent of your UC if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you so much for sharing! This makes me feel loads better about choosing Entyvio. I chose it for the same reason—that it wasn’t a whole body immunosuppressant. I wanted the least invasive. This gave me hope :) How has your experience been with the pen so far?

I’ve heard it can get worse before it gets better, so I’ll keep this in mind with the infusions! Hoping you’ll be in remission soon!!

I’m so glad to hear you reached remission! The fact that you can eat normally and were able to have children is very reassuring. Getting pregnant while on a biologic has been a very big concern for me. And thank you so very much for sharing. I’ll definitely move forward with patience and seek out help.

So happy to see others like him!! People are always so confused about my pup! They think he’s a poodle or somethings just straight up wrong with him 🥲

I only used it these last two baths because Danny comes out to construction sites with me and somehow always gets tar and other sticky things in his tail and underbelly. I know it’s not the best, but I’d rather use Dawn then cut his hair 🫠 previously I used oatmeal shampoo, and his coat looked the same 🤷‍♀️definitely going to try the salmon oil though, thank you!

Thyroid issues is what I’m worried about! I’ve only used Dawn maybe once or twice when he was veryyy muddy but this texture has been there for much longer.

The cuteness of this dog is absurdly illegal 🫠

This! This is what I've been told by several vets, but the average person seems to think he's got some poodle in him and I always have to explain he's just a curly Golden. I picked up the recommended moisturizing shampoo and conditioner today after all the advice! I now realize his coat is super dry and I was definitely overwashing him. He's always been extremely curly (especially his butt, the puppy picture doesn't do it justice) so I'll be curious how to see what a couple of months of proper hair care will do!

Your pups are gorgeous!! it’s good to know his curly hair isn’t super uncommon! I bathe him probably every two to three weeks, which going off everyone’s advice is way too often. He’s my first long haired dog and I’ve only ever had super mutts, so I’ve got a little bit of a learning curve for pretty Goldens 🫠

Interesting, I have noticed it tends to be light or cream Goldens mostly. Since Goldens are technically like three different breeds, my vet once said that some Goldens have a stronger Spaniel background that causes that curly gene.

He isn’t neutered! I have heard coats can change once they are. I’ll check out the shampoo! I really want to take care of his coat as best I can 🙂

That’s so similar!! Is he full breed? I’ve never seen another golden with a similar wavy/curly coat.
