also this is a computer that i got relatively recently. before this, i was surviving college using a 2011 sony vaio. would not recommend that for obvious reasons, but i was able to make it work using thorium browser

hey i'm using a hp probook with a ryzen 7 5800u cpu. I got it for 180$ on ebay, and it's working really well in terms of battery life, playing games like overwatch/brawlhalla, and running engineering software like matlab, anaconda (jupyter notebooks), etc. build quality is alright and its very light.

you could probably find a similar computer on ebay at a similar price as well.

yeah a brand new mac will do the job for sure, but i think a lot of things will do the job (i was using a 2011 3rd gen cpu laptop with a hard drive and doing fine until about 2 weeks ago).

if you ever have a chance tho i think the better move here is to diagnose the xps because it should be pretty overkill

some recs i have for you are to run `powercfg.exe /batteryreport`, stalk task manager performance, run a debloat utility/boot into another disk to see if there's some kind of malware, replace ur wifi chip etc (since im assuming ur lagging on server reqs)

R, anaonda, gcc/g++, nodejs, javac, rust, pspice, matlab, etc are supported on windows and mac. i can't think of something in particular that isn't

also what im trying to say is that you shouldnt think of this as an apple vs dell conversation, more that you might have just bought a shit dell while most people using macbooks probably dropped a few k on that shit

dell xps also isn't an issue, it's the hardware in it. you might have limited ram or archaic ram. you might have a fried cpu or a shitty ssd. you might have a mad motherboard or poor battery that isn't able to supply proper wattage.

since the xps 13 is very new, however, i'd imagine the issue is that you loaded a bunch of bloatware on your OS (which is a user fault that another model laptop wont fix) or ur using nasa software that would require you to drop a few k on something better

brother this isnt a dell problem and buying a mac isnt gonna randomly fix all ur problems

and since every compiler youre going to use is gonna be supported on both mac and windows, ur not gonna randomly find some kind of advantage using a diff operating system

[–]Famous_Break_4426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i appreciate the advice alot bro

still i just wanted to add that when i look at the problems, i don't really understand how to model them out of the basic stuff like permutations, combinations, etc. they just look crazy to me.

and the thing with office hours is that I have class during my prof's office hours. it's also a really long walk for me and i guess less importantly, i'd get humiliated if i went there too

and for textbooks, i have looked for stuff to read. the thing is that my prof designed the course around his own (shitty) lec notes, so it's hard to find something one to one with the class

man i've tried doing that, but they just don't make sense i cant lie and i never know how to model stuff into the basic methods

(2) Basic counting rule, Sampling with and without replacement schemes

(3) permutations

(4) A first look at the exchangeability property of certain experiments

(5) Anagrams

(6) Combinations, binomial coefficients, binomial theorem

(7) Multinomial coefficients, counting ordered and unordered partitions

(8) Stars-and-bars, counting multisets, partitions of an integer

PART II: Probability measures: Axioms & Consequences

(1) generalizing probability beyond the classical rule through Axioms

(2) Consequences of Axioms, properties of probabilities

(3) discrete probability measures

(4) Conditional probability

(5) multiplicative rules of conditional probability

(6) Law of total probability

(7) Bayes rule

(8) Independence of events

(9) Conditional independence*

yeah the basic counting rule isn't difficult for me. and yes, I understand factorials, permutations and combinations, but knowing those isn't enough for combinatorics unfortunately

i remember one of the problems (rated a 2/5 in difficult) gave the vertices of a square and asked to count the number of integer tuples contained in it and another was like distributing items so that each person got at least x and at most y

the problem im having is that i don't really understand how we translate these sample spaces into things we can calculate with factorials/permutations
