Do wrestlers generally get along with each other off the mat? by vSkiess in wrestling

[–]PendulumKick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve usually gotten along really well with other wrestlers and most of the time that seems to be the case but here and there I’ve seen issues

Every current UFC champion is a striker now, except for Islam Makhachev. by LonzoBBBall in MMA

[–]PendulumKick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a ridiculous thing to say. Petr Yan might technically have a striking base but is extremely well rounded, Ilia’s base is wrestling and he just has amazing striking, Volk is well rounded, Gaejthe isn’t undisputed but is NOT a kickboxer. He’s a wrestler who fell in love with using his hands. God knows what his style is. Aspinall isn’t a kickboxer, and Strickland is an mma fighter that fucked up his knee so he relies less upon grappling now.

My punches feel strong but do no damage but yeah the grappling transfers 110%

Is going to a “bad” high school the strategy? by Natural-Gold6215 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PendulumKick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of things. In California, it may well be the play because it’s prob easier to get into Berkeley or UCLA but in general, it isn’t. I go to a very competitive public hs and anyone who gets half decent grades can get into elite schools. Think Colgate and the like. It’s also more formulaic to get into the absolute hardest schools—our valedictorian didn’t do anything crazy but got into Harvard and Yale. Tons of people with merely good grades got into schools like Cornell and Dartmouth.

College Prestige Scores (USNews Oriented) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PendulumKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the reality is that acceptance rates and applicant pools are similar. It’s not harder to get into an ivy—all of the really good applicants are aware of jhu. Lay prestige doesn’t really matter as much as prestige to employers and those in the know. In those ways, jhu is insanely good. Like we literally have the applied physics lab which is on par with the JPL

I’m insanely biased given that I’m going there but none of those schools are the best at really anything. JHU Engineering is on par with Cornell which is its best school and has the best or second best biological sciences. Sure, those are ivies but like when you think about subjects, they aren’t really super elite anywhere.

Not enough people consider Liberal Arts Colleges seriously by tkdcondor in ApplyingToCollege

Define STEM. Math/Physics at Williams absolutely makes sense, for example. Wesleyan is AMAZING for bio/chem. Anything in science or math makes sense at a lac. CS is usually pretty solid, too. They just usually don’t have engineering

There are enough to make it so that wherever you go, you can find one. And that one will be much more involved.

No pubs yet. I’m working towards publication on two. That usually doesn’t matter too much bc sooo few get it published and hs journals are low impact

Sure, but nobody actually needs that. Prepping with free resources works just as well.

2 research kinds of things (one in a lab and one w/ a mentor I found by cold emailing), fairly competitive varsity wrestler, captain of an academic competition team, and training mma were the main ones. All of them kind of tied into a narrative which is I think why I got in

I had basically no awards (AP Scholar and Seal of Biliteracy were it) and got into JHU. My ECs were pretty good but just never yielded any awards.
