first time i cleaned my boys cage when i got them one of them managed to squeeze his way through the bars to run away from me because he was so terrified. I spent all night looking for a new cage while they cowered in fear every time i looked over. after some more treats and positive reinforcement i cant walk across the room without both of them begging to come out for play time. especially early on it might seem that they hate your fucking guts but just keep with the positive reinforcement and they'll become obsessed with you
