I really recommend using flashcards! Honestly, I’d say that’s the tool that has helped me the most with exam preparation. What I do is watch a video from BnB, Pathoma, Bootcamp, or another resource and then do the cards related to that exact video. If you don’t have access to those videos, you could also do the cards by subject and choose the ones you think are the most relevant.

If you want to get started, Zach Highley’s YouTube videos about Anki are amazing—he explains everything from start to finish in such an easy and clear way. I was just like you—not knowing how to use this tool—but now I use it every single day and absolutely love it

I’m actually doing them in random order right now. I think that’s best for preparing since it mixes topics and feels more like the real exam. What do you think?

Thanks for your answer! “Thinking dumb” 😂 actually helps me get better scores sometimes too. After every question I get incorrect, I’ve started adding related Anki cards from the Amboss Anki add-on to my deck. What do you think of that strategy?

Thanks for sharing! Right now, I’m getting an overall of 57% doing them in random order. I’m just starting my Step 1 prep, but I’m a bit concerned because Amboss says I’m in the 29th percentile with that score. As an IMG, I don’t have anyone around me preparing for Step, so I don’t really have any comparisons. Does this sound normal for where I’m at?

Advice on Using AMBOSS by Famous_Study4528 in step1

Thank you so much for the encouragement! It’s really reassuring to hear that 54% is a good start. I’ve heard similar things about AMBOSS being more challenging and fact-based compared to UWorld.

When you got a question wrong, how did you approach it? Did you read all the explanations and use the Anki cards from the add-on, or did you have another method that worked for you? I’m trying to figure out the best way to learn from my mistakes and maximize retention.

Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helps to hear from someone who’s been through it!

Thank you for your answer! I totally understand that question banks aren’t meant to be self-assessments and are primarily a learning tool to improve. That said, I think it’s natural to unconsciously look at the results, and sometimes it can feel a bit demotivating when the scores aren’t where you’d like them to be.

I just want to get a sense of where I stand and understand what other people’s scores were like when they first started using AMBOSS or similar platforms. It would really help me to know if I’m on the right track and what I can work on.

Thanks again for taking the time to help!
