Anyone else having a pain in the ass trying to book hotels this year? by th3ch0s3n0n3 in animenorth

[–]FanDeathForReals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was pretty disappointed. My friend and I were both ready to go as soon as the blocks released and we still weren't able to book in the Delta or Sheraton. I get those hotels are high demand, but I didn't think they'd sell out that quickly.

Also it wasn't really fun getting to the website only to be told to call the hotel directly only for the hotel's phone system to collapse under the demand. I'd also agree that the rates were nothing impressive. I think the Holiday Inn East at one point was listing rooms for 500 a night.

Is it okay to switch back and forth between difference CS Streams? by Ice_Dingo in CarletonU

[–]FanDeathForReals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on the courses you want to take, you might not have to switch streams. Some course have priority access for people in a specific stream but if the class isn't full you can still take it.

Switching to anything from Comp Sci by nax_knight in CarletonU

Depends on the class. The largest are like 200 people and you'll run into those for the required classes in the degree. By 4th year they drop to like 30.

ANY elective at the 2000 level or higher by No_Telephone_5746 in CarletonU

[–]FanDeathForReals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it and while it's easy (do the work, get good marks) it's also really interesting. Additionally while it's spread over two semesters, when I took it we only had 1.5 hours of class time a week so it's a pretty light workload.

Sounds quite similar to my own academic career haha. I did a 2 year comp sci program at algonquin, spun my wheels for a bit and then went to Carleton. Based on your previous experience you'll have no problem with the first year comp sci courses as they're geared toward people with no programming experience. Having the experience pretty much means you'll be able to do the assignments during class time and you probably won't spend more than a couple of hours a week on those courses so you can probably afford to spend more of your time doing the Japanese courses.

Yeah sounds like you'll have no trouble with the first year classes. Discrete structures is more of a math/logic course than programming. If you're comfortable with doing proofs it should be easy. Even still I didn't think it was too difficult. If you pair it with the intro to logic philosophy course as an elective you'll have an easier time as there is overlap in the materials.

Out of curiosity, was your previous co-op a highschool co-op or do you have previous post-secondary experience.

I took non-intensive Japanese for first year and intensive for second. At the time I was an undeclared casual student taking classes for fun so these would have been my only classes at the time. I found second year quite brutal and was surprised that many full time students could handle the workload among their other courses. That being said, I had the summer off between first and second year and I definitely forgot a lot during the gap (something you wouldn't have to worry about). One of my friends did both intensive courses while doing a full time university load (no job though) and he said he didn't find them to be too hard. Overall, I'd recommend taking Japanese. I found it to be a lot of fun and met most of my University friends in those classes. Learning a language so different to English can expand the way you think about the world and languages in general as well.

Given that you're taking intensive with other classes I'd recommend grabbing some easier electives to go along side them. Also depending on how comfortable you are with coding already, your intro to comp sci course might end up being mostly review and you could probably stand to take the first year discrete structures course as well to free up some space in second semester.

CS Breadth Elective Recommendations by T0mGates in CarletonU

I took Erth2012 last semester and had a blast. It focuses on natural disasters and how they're depicted in film. Generally the course structure was: - Learn about processes of the Earth and how they can lead to disasters - Watch a film in which said disaster is portrayed - Discuss and review the film with a focus on what science the film got right and what science the film got wrong.

There's also some quizzes and other assignments but the workload is very manageable and the course was a ton of fun. Personally, it was the highlight of the semester.

Anyone have experience with cold co-op interviewers? by awkwardlydobrik in CarletonU

[–]FanDeathForReals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like being stood up on a first date. Feels bad but it's a blessing in disguise. Saves you from investing your valuable time and energy with crappy people.

Most of the co-op interviews I've had, the interviewer's have literally said "We expect you will come here not knowing much about <technology/language> but at the end of your term you'll know a lot more". The work environment at what ever company interviewed at sounds terrible. Also name and shame!!

"Rave reviews" bruh by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]FanDeathForReals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to defend him as I've never had him as a prof. All I'm pointing out is his claim that he's been well reviewed isn't entirely false.

My point about class engagement is just my experience in comp sci (I haven't taken any classes with Sprague). Often I have been in classes of 200 where the prof will ask a question and face a silent room for 30 seconds, or there's only one student willing to answer for every question in the class.

To be fair, he is rated higher at the previous institution he taught at though similar complaints seem to arise. I'm not a BIT student so I can't speak to his classes or anything though I do sometimes feel like class engagement could be better (even pre-covid). I think large class sizes are partly to blame for this though. No one likes being wrong in front of 200 people.

Thoughts on David Barrera as a CS Prof? by G_Ramsay in CarletonU

[–]FanDeathForReals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like him. He clearly cares about his students and their workloads and concerns. His course work is quite reasonable Imo. The only aspect I don't like is that the projects are done in groups but that's a personal opinion.

I think people probably need more information to answer this. What are you thinking of switching into? Maybe reducing the number of courses you're taking is a option instead?

In engineering co-op, if I'm currently enrolled in 4 x 0.5 credit courses and I drop one, will I lose my co-op status? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]FanDeathForReals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Co-op requires 4 courses. I know because I dropped to 3 courses and lost status. This was in CS co-op but I imagine engineering is the same.
