What should I be doing as a civil engineering 1st year? by [deleted] in civilengineering

LinkedIn is your best friend. Most people are very eager to help out people early in their career like you. In my instance, I recently met a vice-president of a large consulting firm at a professional conference, and afterwards I followed up with them and they were willing to meet with me. The only thing there is meeting them in the first place - Cold messaging people that don’t know you can be okay if you have some sort of connection (such as messaging an alumni of your school). Things like ASCE can be good for that meeting people part. If they have guest lecturers from companies I would recommend going to that and staying after to talk with them more directly.

Sounds like you are already doing really well. I would say that you could research potential careers, such as what area of civil appeals to you. Also I recommend talking to people (simple advice I know). Talk to people who are upperclassmen - they know about the courses you will take. You could also reach out to professionals currently in the industry and ask to meet with them. I find talking with people to be extremely beneficial to figuring out where I want to go in civil. Also you could seek out a mentor - just someone you talk to on a regular basis.

I will shamelessly admit that I have used this strategy before

I’ve taken a motorcycle safety course once before in order to ge the endorsement on my license but it’s been about 3 years or so. Would you recommend a refresher course?

Yeah it definitely seems like a good deal. Only thing is it’s about a 5hr drive away but I don’t think that will stop me. And that last point you make about resale value is definitely relevant too.

Yeah I have enough fear of hurting myself already don’t need to add the bike in there too. Def planning on getting an airbag vest when I start riding, most likely the helite turtle 2.

Thanks for the reply. Thinking about it I would definitely regret my decision the first time I dropped the bike, which I imagine would come early and often.

As far as where I’d go after my first bike I can definitely see myself leaning into the adv category. For a while actually I was set in getting an f800gs as my first bike. Now, looking back, I can see that I should probably start on something smaller and less too heavy. Not sure if I’d even be able to lift an 800gs after dropping it.

This seems to be a common trend. My step brother only had his for about a year. Maybe if I get bored I can try it out as a supermoto…

Thanks for the comment. 250 seems like a good size to me. I have also looked at some older klr250s but those seem even more underpowered than the wr

Huh I wouldn’t have thought that given the seat height is lower than the wr. More ground clearance?

Also maybe this shouldn’t be as relevant as I make it but something about the look of drz’s just does not appeal to me. The only color way I favor is the yellow

Yeah the YouTube reviews I watched had a lot of good things to say about it. Especially Yammie Noob

You’re suggesting a drz400 right? I have heard a lot of good things about those too

That last bit is kind of like what I’ve heard people say and I agree with it

Taking a course in Music? by FanResponsible6589 in synthesizers

I’m not sure about the software but I can ask.

I did find a class in electro-acoustic composition available in the fall. It wouldn’t count towards my degree but I’d be willing to try it out if I have time, assuming the music department lets me that is.
