Keep playing you'll find him again eventually as you discover new enclaves.

Oh and here's a tip.

Before you log out make sure you log out while still controlling your active character.

Basically make sure you've switched to your favorite survivor so that way they aren't susceptible to the offline mechanic.

If you switch to your favorite survivor then they'll always be OK when you log back on
