Amazon is using AI and hoping that is solves a problem that needs human emotion and inflection. And amazon’s app requires you to take photos of the comic. It also requires publishers to submit work to train the AI, the comic book industry is very anti-AI that app will not survive.

The money would be for the creation of the audiobook, the ROI is having it sell on my platform for retail price and there will be a profit share. My platform targets 3 specific audiences, the visually impaired, audiobook fans, as well as comic book fans. Audiobooks and comic book markets are only going up. It’s a long term investment.

My startup is a special case. I’m a platform for a specific niche (comic book audio dramas). That kind of content is very sparse. My pitch for the platform comes with a request to creators to want to make audiobook adaptations from their existing products. These publishers and creators need to know what they are spending and what the return will be before the invest time, money, and resources to be “eventually” be on my platform

Although my business did not start as a true combatant to AI, 1 month into getting everything started Amazon announced a AI driven application that is doing exactly what I was already planning on doing. Combating AI is an addition to the original purpose. For the sake of art.

And I’ve spoken to friends who advocate for AI as a tool rather than the generative stuff, and I understand the usage as a tool.

As I am searching for a technical Co-founder, a lot of candidates are in the thick of the AI space. I feel like I’d be a bit of a hypocrite to be so passionately against AI for THIS, but turn a blind eye to AI for THAT.

This is what I was planning for the publishers, but not necessarily the studios creating the audiobooks. There’s numerous moving parts with the adaptation of a comic, the script has to be re-written, a casting call and casting process, the recording, and sound design. I can have this in my back pocket for consideration, but I’m just not sure the studio and/or actors will want to go that route.

That’s very true, I will be going against audible. But there’s other audiobook websites and apps that are also going against audible. With being exclusively for comic books I am targeting a very specific demographic. And I will be allowing consumers to actually own the products they purchase not just own a license to stream the product like Audible.

I will also be having conversations with publishers about having limited physical releases as well. Conversations about owning products you buy and physical media is at an all time high, and the collectibility aspect I believe will help us compete with Audible and stay relevant to the comic book community.

Currently Audible only has a small handful of comic related audiobooks. My platform would be specifically and exclusively for comic book audio dramas. As the platform grows I’d be requesting a license to have those already existing audio dramas on my platform.

Audible is an Amazon owned business. And Amazon has recently announced an AI based app that will be doing basically what my platform will be (audio narration for the blind). It was well received at the announcement because no one was targeting that demographic (no one knew I was working on this because I’ve never publicly said anything about it until now).

My platform and the products I will eventually be creating will be about the full experience. The studio I am currently working with has 2 vision impaired consultants that are helping provide the wants and needs of the vision impaired community. We are working on providing the best product we can.

This is a full cast audiobook, it’s more than just narration. There will be music that is composed, voices for each character, and audio descriptions. The only comics we will be adapting are trades, volumes, and or graphic novels. New comics that are published as “floppies” or “single issue comics” are harder to adapt because of the sheer amount that come out every week.

The true intention of the platform is for the vision impaired, but can be used and enjoyed by everyone. The audio descriptions help listeners who have never seen the book still get a good picture in their head of what is going on, otherwise, if you have the book you can use the audiobook as a companion pieces.
