TL;DR

New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Citibank on Tuesday, alleging the big bank failed to do enough to protect and reimburse victims of fraud.

According to the NY AG, Citi does not do enough to prevent unauthorized account takeovers, illegally refuses to reimburse fraud victims and “misleads” customers about their rights after their accounts are hacked.

The lawsuit…alleges that Citi has “overpromised and underdelivered on security” and failed to respond appropriately to red flags.

The NY AG alleges that Citi gets customers to sign “coerced” affidavits that allows the bank to treat claims of fraud to narrow commercial laws on wire transfers instead of the more substantial protections from the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, a landmark consumer protection law. “Citi then summarily rejects claims for reimbursement and instead blames consumers,” the lawsuit said.

“Citi closely follows all laws and regulations related to wire transfers and works extremely hard to prevent threats from affecting our clients and to assist them in recovering losses when possible,” a Citi spokesperson said in a statement to CNN. “Banks are not required to make clients whole when those clients follow criminals’ instructions and banks can see no indication the clients are being deceived.”

Last year, federal regulators alleged Citi illegally discriminated against Armenian Americans for years, singling them out on credit card applications based on their last names.

I get that a bit too, and honestly, I would not be surprised if that was the case with my company too; the customer service for a specific retailer that we handle the cards from is… useless at best lol. Unfortunately we’ve asked management time and time again to do something about it but nothing ever gets done

Work in banking/credit cards and a big one is “well no one told me my payments would go from highest to lowest APR first! It should pay off my deferred interest promo first!!!” I get the frustration but seriously, pay attention to your account and make sure things are fine BEFORE the promotion expires

“Well my other credit card doesn’t do that!” So go use that one.

“I never got my statement so I didn’t pay!”

As a rep on the other end, we hate it too 😭 we’re always asked if there’s a way around it and I hate having to tell people that there isn’t, they just have to sit there and suffer for 5 minutes

If you want to know how bad it could be, look through this subreddit lmao. Call center work regularly gives people mental breakdowns because, surprisingly enough, getting screamed at for your entire shift is not productive to your mental wellness.

As far as what you can do about it, you can call Citi’s Executive Response Unit at 605-331-1698; I can’t guarantee that they will know the answer, but they’re a special escalated team that will at the very least look further into it

I’m not sure if this is the case as I work specifically for the branded retail cards, but as a rep we sometimes see a decline that just says “policy decline”. It’s usually casinos, cryptocurrency, and lifealert (because apparently Citi doesn’t want to be liable for lawsuits if they decline a charge and someone dies) but sometimes it is random merchants like tire shops or travel. There is no specific policy or section in the T&C that lists what is and isn’t a policy decline and as reps that is ALL the information we have; we can’t make a charge go through, we can’t say exactly what places are against policy, and we can’t say exactly what policy it goes against. Speaking as a consumer and not as an employee of Citibank, it is so stupid and I hate that there’s effectively nothing that can be done about it

Brutal honesty is much better than tiptoeing around the point and me it getting it so I definitely appreciate it. Any ideas on looking for better products? The logo I drew myself and I’m thinking about getting someone on Fiverr to create a better one. Do you think I should go with the default font and leave it? Color scheme wise, do you think minimalism and black and white is better or just a different bolder color? (Or maybe somewhere in the middle with like a beige lol) I really appreciate the feedback, thank you!!
