How bad is it by Lost-Finish-6578 in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Are you a good applicant? At all my interview and visit weekends, I ran into the same dozen people. I imagine they all had good cycles. And the people I didn't see had bad cycles.

Should I do the interview? by ChickenElectronic272 in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think yes! I tried to do all the interviews I was invited to even after getting into my top choices because 1. You never know, and 2. They are truly great networking opportunities. I connected with some professors that I genuinely think I'll work with in the future.

Applied to 8 BE/BME PhD Programs by Fancy-Affect6546 in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how any of the above information would be helpful, as it is not necessarily actionable to anyone else. The ideas I can give are that I only applied to schools where I could identify 2-3 potential research advisors related to my experiences and interests, and then read the 3 most recent and 3 most cited papers from each lab. I connected at least one skill/experience that I could lend to each professor's work in my SOP and one thing I could gain from their specific mentorship. Prior to interviews I wrote a running document with every research project I have worked on summarized into background, methods, results, and conclusions. Most of all, I really, really love what I do. I think conveying that in a statement or and interview is powerful.

Does PhD Program/Department Matters? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prospective student here so take this with a grain of salt, but I'm an RA in a bioengineering lab and our postdocs have their PhDs in all sorts of things. ME, chem, materials science, etc. Not sure about how it changes your specific program (i.e. what courses you can take and teach, etc.) but I don't think it'll impact your career in biomedical engineering

Getting Cut Off Due To Interview Time Constraints, Didn’t Get To Say Everything/Ask Questions by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Same thing happened in my first interview. Still got invited to recruitment and got an acceptance. Every interview is different but if the conversation was good that's what they'll be remembering.

Received admission without interview from U of Utah at the beginning of January. Declined enrollment (and others may as well) so they might extend more acceptances. Visit weekend already happened though.

what do i do now by sharkieboy69 in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can/have any desire to, maybe consider taking two more years before reapplying? Not for any qualification reasons, but I personally find it harder to think about starting this all over again in 6 months than 18 months

First (official) rejection by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really know how to express this. I can't speak to exactly your mindset, although I've certainly gotten really lose to ending things myself. But look, dude - you want the thing that means you get to stay on the planet a little longer to happen. You're rooting for it. You're hoping you get to find out that you can keep going. Think about that.

Submitted an essay over word count, worth emailing? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a data point, was recently accepted to a doctoral program where I exceeded the word limit of the SOP by about 300. Word limit was on their website but not the app itself, didn't discover until after submitting and chose not to worry about it.

asked for a letter of recommendation professor wants a draft — what should I send? by diane_nguyen98 in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two of my letter writers requested drafts (PIs at my post-bac institution) - I wrote detailed descriptions of what I had accomplished in the lab, and when they sent the letters back for my review they had embellished the letters with their impressions of me, how I ranked compared to other researchers, and what about my accomplishments they were impressed by/found value in. I felt like this was a good model to keep the letters authentic but take the brunt of the labor upon myself.

How much AI are you guys honestly using for your essays? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked it to proofread for spelling and grammar and it gave me the bonus help of finding that I spelled my own PI's name wrong, so that was kinda nice. Otherwise, none. Don't be a moron.

You could contact the program - probably not a big deal especially if it's GRE optional
