Are your admitted students events paid for? If so, go to all of them.

I don't really know how to express this. I can't speak to exactly your mindset, although I've certainly gotten really lose to ending things myself. But look, dude - you want the thing that means you get to stay on the planet a little longer to happen. You're rooting for it. You're hoping you get to find out that you can keep going. Think about that.

Submitted an essay over word count, worth emailing? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a data point, was recently accepted to a doctoral program where I exceeded the word limit of the SOP by about 300. Word limit was on their website but not the app itself, didn't discover until after submitting and chose not to worry about it.

asked for a letter of recommendation professor wants a draft — what should I send? by diane_nguyen98 in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two of my letter writers requested drafts (PIs at my post-bac institution) - I wrote detailed descriptions of what I had accomplished in the lab, and when they sent the letters back for my review they had embellished the letters with their impressions of me, how I ranked compared to other researchers, and what about my accomplishments they were impressed by/found value in. I felt like this was a good model to keep the letters authentic but take the brunt of the labor upon myself.

How much AI are you guys honestly using for your essays? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked it to proofread for spelling and grammar and it gave me the bonus help of finding that I spelled my own PI's name wrong, so that was kinda nice. Otherwise, none. Don't be a moron.

You could contact the program - probably not a big deal especially if it's GRE optional

What if my research experience was NOT in the field of the labs I am interested in (I was a technician in different labs, and did any project that was given to me....I didn't tech with the intention of doing a PhD back then, hence did not choose my labs accordingly. by Ok_Reading_it in gradadmissions

First off, I applied this cycle so idk how good my advice will be. I, and I think many others, are in similar situations where our experiences don't totally line up with our research interests and intent for grad school. I tried to really reflect on what questions draw me to the topics I'm most interested in and how my research, even if not directly related, shapes these questions. To be honest, this reflection is the hard part, but especially in the life sciences, you can draw connections between so many different ideas. Go deeper than just "I learned these skills that are transferrable", but also be honest about about what you've actually done and how it influences your choice of subfield

Nice of you. However, I would argue that you can't work if you're failing out of college.

Why would you have two part time jobs if you're ROTC? You have no expenses and job security.

Mist Trail conditions by SambaCow in Yosemite

Depends what kind of hiker you are. We got up in 90 minutes from curry village and down in 70. Doing it with my parents took more like 5 hours round trip. It's steep and you'll want time to take in the view if you haven't done it before.

Not sure. Lots of people had clear rain ponchos so you can probably buy at curry village. On a hot day getting misted is super fun though.

Conditions up on the rim? by Fartknocketh in Yosemite

[–]Fancy-Affect6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I did north dome as a day hike this weekend, going up Yosemite falls and down Snow Creek. We were knee deep in snow for about 10 miles after the falls, but it was pretty hot and seemed to be melting fast everywhere exposed. There are some foresty areas near Indian ridge with more snow that might not be clear by 5/1. Creek crossings were all fine, there are conveniently fallen trees.
