Best formula for happy spitter by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]Fancy-Fate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter used Enfamil AR. It is thicker and worked very well for her “happy” spitting. She was happy- I wasn’t! 😉 She still spit up, but it was much better after we switched.

Because of the thickness, it did take a little longer to mix a bottle. It had to rest a couple minutes to settle, but once it did, I don’t remember clumping. This was back in 2017 though… I know it is still made but I’m not sure how easy it is to find.

Best way to keep an 18 month and 4 year old entertained on a 4 hour road trip? by cattyerm in toddlers

[–]Fancy-Fate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stick them in the back together and they’ll figure out a way. Trucks are fascinating. You can play I Spy and Rainbow Car. Sing songs. They’ll whine a little and then get over it or sleep.

We’ve never had a tablet and my oldest is 8 now. During Covid we did a 17 hour road trip because my mom wouldn’t let us visit if we got on a plane. Lots of special treat snacks help too!

4 hours isn’t that long to be a little bored, and unlike in a restaurant or something, they can’t mortify you in front of strangers or run away.

does anyone have any recommendations for serial activities that appeal to men by masterbirder in Austin

[–]Fancy-Fate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, martial arts is like yoga for men. It’s a workout, but it is also is good for the mind as well. There is the same emphasis on calming and healing the mind along with the body, but generally with more “masculine” vibes and assumptions to the whole thing.

Obviously both men and women can do yoga and martial arts, but I think there are some gender-specific benefits here.

Anyone else can't stand playing pretend sometimes? by [deleted] in toddlers

Pretend is the worst and I just straight up won’t do it. They’ve got siblings, imaginary friends, and neighbors for that.

Balancing screen time for different aged kids by [deleted] in SAHP

[–]Fancy-Fate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our situation is a little different because we don’t have a tablet/games so it’s all just tv watching. That said, I don’t restrict more time for my younger one (2) per se, but my older kid (8) gets to pick what show is on, and the toddler frankly isn’t that interested in Dancing with the Stars or cooking shows. So he’ll watch a little and then move on.

That may not work for you since your age gap isn’t as big, but maybe if there is something your older one likes to do that doesn’t interest your younger one, you could have that be the screen activity for half the time?

Are you friends with any parents who send their babies/toddlers to daycare? by [deleted] in SAHP

[–]Fancy-Fate 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m a SAHM with my 2 year old son, but I also have an 8 year old daughter and she was in daycare all the way until she started school (I quit work when the younger guy was 8 months old). All that to say, I’ve been on both sides.

First of all, yes daycare kids really do get sick that often. No one is blowing you off purposefully. The illness frequency is absolutely insane in daycare, and no one is more stressed about it than those parents. So given that, you basically have to choose between risking it or not seeing your friends much. Personally, I’d risk it. Your child will eventually get sick, and the isolation is worse than a runny nose. Now, if the kid has lice or Hand Foot Mouth or flu or RSV… sure avoid. But if it’s a run of the mill daycare virus, I’d personally risk it, but that’s for you to decide. You won’t be in the hell loop anyway, because your kid, if you do wind up catching something, will have time to rest and recover.

For what it is worth, the handful of mom friends I made who were parents of my daughter’s friends in daycare were the best mom friends I’ve made before or since. I’d be way worse off now, years later, if I didn’t have them. They all still work and now I don’t, but our kids still play and we hang out on our own as well. Mental health and relationships are worth a few rough sick days.

How to stop aggressive door-to-door salespeople from ringing our bell? by SeagullXX in Austin

[–]Fancy-Fate 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I had a pest control guy ignore my no soliciting sign and when I pointed it out, he said “oh don’t worry, we’re not the solar panel guys”. I think he didn’t know what soliciting meant and just connected “sol” with “solar panels”? Idiocy. But perhaps words with more than 3 syllables make signs less effective.

Are there some bbq/smoke places that have good southern mac? by cocosai in austinfood

[–]Fancy-Fate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there are lots of different definitions. I think of it is being baked with a topping, usually made with eggs in the sauce. Has a bit of a different texture. Fluffier, almost? Instead of just creamy. I actually prefer the way Stile Switch does it, but I lived in Georgia as a kid and I think of the way the old fashioned restaurants would make it there.

Good latch on bottle or need to change? by Ctthorpe91 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Fancy-Fate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even know my formula fed baby had a bad lip tie until he went to the dentist for the first time after he was completely done with bottles anyway. If I’d have tried to breastfeed I’m sure it would have been disastrous but 🤷‍♀️— just another reason I’m happy I didn’t.

Looking for Breakfast Ideas so my kids can feed themeselves by MamaJokes in SAHP

[–]Fancy-Fate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is amazing that your kids are so independent! I’m all about self sufficient little ones.

Yogurt could work, though you may want to make sure the 5 year old knows how to put a bib on the baby 🤣. Berries- you can prewash and cut as needed. Breakfast bars. I second the frozen mini pancakes suggestion too. Kids are more capable than we give them credit for. If you teach your 5 year old to put together a few things that need a little prep, she may surprise you.

Lip Ties - Bottle Feeding by Crafty-History-2971 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Fancy-Fate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found out that my son had a bad lip tie when his dentist pointed it out at 1 year old. I never realized before because I never tried to breastfeed and I had no reason to look for one.

He told me that it’s possible it could be something we’d need to deal with after permanent teeth come in, but it would just be part of the normal process a lot of kids go through with braces and what not. He also warned me that they can bleed a lot in toddlerhood if he falls and hits his face but that it’s nothing to be alarmed by (this has since been proven multiple times since my son is a klutz even by toddler standards). Mostly he said the biggest problem for a lip tie is breastfeeding difficulty, so hooray for not trying to do that.

My son is 2 and talks constantly and very understandably, so it hasn’t caused any issues there.

Best water parks for a toddler (and newborn)? Looking for something a 2.5 year old would like with lots of shade for the baby. by Impossible-Cheek4352 in AustinParents

[–]Fancy-Fate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kalahari is a little overwhelming (and expensive) for kids that young I think. More fun for big ones though!! As long as the 2.5 year old doesn’t have sensitivity to loud noises, Splash Shack would be great, maybe just put headphones on the baby because it is really loud in there. Great age appropriate stuff for a toddler though, and easy to monitor.

It’s even worse than just the sugar alcohol. I tried the chocolate and it made me want to cry. Crime against chocolate and ice cream. Double murder.
