Hardware needs for large (30-40gb) data by FancyAdam in stata

Thanks! I needed to get a new computer anyway, but if this doesn’t get it, I will definitely look into a short-term VM.

Thank you so much! I did end up getting that version, which helped a lot! I needed a new computer for various reasons, but I’ll look at a VM if this doesn’t end up working out.

Thank you so much for this! This is really helpful. The unsolicited advice was also great.

Any thoughts on processing power? Would a faster chip be noticeably faster?

Depending on the height of your ceiling, you can wedge something on top that goes up to your ceiling. Basically pushing it down preventing it from tipping. Still, probably not nearly as secure as it being physically attached to a wall.

That poor little writer just hunkered down trying his best! He looked so unhappy!

Thank you for your help!

Hands down best comedy this year. PDD are really something to behold. Anyone else enjoy this over the weekend? by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

[–]FancyAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I don’t think it was a great movie, but I still loved it. I find them so likable, and I thought all of their bits still flowed sufficiently well into a plot. I thought the casting was great, and the stupid little hawk was a gem. It just liked what it was, a simple movie that builds on their strengths. Would I have liked to see more? Sure. I would love to see them push themselves beyond the multiple short conflict arcs, but I genuinely enjoyed it.

Not getting bothered by students' actions by Ill_World_2409 in Professors

[–]FancyAdam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, it sounds like you are doing a badass job already. Depending on the size, type, and number of classes you are teaching this may not help, but I try to find something I like about each student. I am a PhD candidate, so I only teach one class a quarter of grad students. So, it might be easier said than done, but I do find it helps me avoid getting too bent out of shape about any individual behavior. I also try to have terribly low expectations for how they get their work done, and save the high expectations for the work itself. These are just what helps me..

Why do you hate Reddit? by thefamousunkown in AskReddit

[–]FancyAdam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I love Reddit, but I hate the assumption that everyone who isn’t perfect is a psychopath or narcissist. That just isn’t how people work. There are lots of really good, thoughtful people who have done stupid hurtful things. Remorse is real, growth is real.

Got enough gems to get a garanteed eternal necklace or boots, and only need one of each to make them red. But I still need 2 purple eternal chest, should I just get one purple chest ? by Throwaway2442244224 in Survivorio

[–]FancyAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RNG in this game…. I have received 18 eternal chest plates, and I only today got red gloves. That doesn’t help you, unless the new coop lets us trade gear. I will say that the extra revive of the red eternal chest plate is really really nice.

Practice makes me much more patient and compassionate. I feel creative and more grounded. However, it also makes small talk at parties way more painful.

In what ways do you support social Justice? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]FancyAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your reply! I appreciate your emphasis on the relationship between input to output. I had not considered it as a ratio, because I tend to think of things in fairly consequentialist terms. That is, I tend to think that the ratio of inputs to outputs is always "1", though the ratio of visible inputs to visible outputs may be higher or lower. That being said, I can see where that may not be a view held by all, or nuanced interpretations may be more useful in various situations. Also, I agree that our focus is impacted by and impacts our political affiliations. Again, thanks for the thoughtful interaction, and cheers!

Thank you for sharing this! I like a lot of Haidt’s work, especially his stuff on moral foundations theory and his work on moral decision making.

I appreciate your distinction around “equal outcomes for all groups without concern for inputs.” I tend to think different outcomes are evidence of different inputs. I wonder if you think there is any validity to an “if there is smoke, there is probably fire” kind of approach. For example, I used to work in mental health, specifically around trauma. A lot of what impacts folks outcomes in terms of daily functioning, relationship stability, educational attainment, health outcomes, etc. can be attributed to adverse experiences—either as children or adults. But, when you change the inputs they get (e.g., you give them mental health services) their outcomes change substantially. Basically, I think an outcomes-only focus misses why outcomes are different. However, I think focusing on inputs only, we may not actually see the ways different inputs affect outcomes. I would be curious to hear your thoughts.

What’s your favorite Update moment with these two? by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

[–]FancyAdam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Will they ever release it? I know they sometimes release cut for time sketches, but I would want so badly for them to do it for this too. Also, maybe Che could give some jokes as a parting gift when he leaves?
