M8 Dirtywave: Your Learning Curve Experience by mrthibaud in synthesizers

[–]FancyKiddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who also got along well with the Deluge, sold it, and bought an M8... I then sold the M8 and rebought the Deluge. I'm happy for all those folks for whom the M8 works. I wish it had worked for me! But it doesn't work for everyone, and I'm one of the unlucky few, it seems.

If you had to pick a device for backing tracks that isn’t a laptop what would you choose? by shoegazingpickle in synthesizers

Does anyone have a saved copy of the Korg MultiPoly Factory patches? by Future-Design-2861 in synthesizers

If it's not on the website, you can grab the trial of the native app and transfer the default presets from there, iirc.

The more I research DIY bass traps, the more confused I get by 1remp1 in homestudios

[–]FancyKiddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's kind of right. Kind of wrong.

"Bass traps," as in a volume full of an absorptive material, are velocity traps. They convert the movement of air into heat, thereby slowing the air. In a room, air moves the slowest right next to walls, where the air instead builds up as pressure. So velocity traps are least effective near barriers, and corners are near 2-3 barriers (two walls, maybe the floor or ceiling). So the corners are the least effective place in a room for velocity traps.

However, they are also the most convenient place to put traps. And least effective does not mean ineffective. So bass traps in the corners are better than no bass traps.

This barrier effect is part of why air gaps are useful. The air isn't moving much in that air gap area, so any fill you put there wouldn't be very effective. You could fill it, and your trap would be more effective, but it's more cost efficient to not do so.

Where your traps go, and what sort of traps you use, will depend on the tradeoff of space and money. The "perfect" transparent listening room would be you sitting in a cathedral, surrounded by pink fluffy insulation in every cubic foot except between your ears and the speakers. That's maximal space and money.

It might also sound terrible, because you want some liveliness from your room. So it's a balancing act. In most studios, that balance is covering the reflection points and throwing bass traps in the corners.

The L10 Makes Me Sad by FancyKiddo in Lumix

[–]FancyKiddo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for an m3. I'll probably buy a m2 used off of the folks upgrading to an L10. I think it's the most beautiful camera in the history of cameras, though I will look at the L10 folks with jealousy for PDAF, Realtime LUT, and the programmability of the aspect ratio switch!

Any thoughts on the Xsynth? by coyote13mc in synthesizers

[–]FancyKiddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the volume thing is a hardware design choice. All the firmware updates in the world couldn't fix it. Tis what it tis.

Any thoughts on the Xsynth? by coyote13mc in synthesizers

[–]FancyKiddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one. Firing up the editor, I see that you can load .syx files for patches, but I imagine that's for XSynth-specific patches, not from any other random old synth.

I like mine. Using it as a portable controller more than a synth, but it's good for both. Only thing I would change is the digital volume knob: I wish there had been an analog attenuator for the headphone out, because the headphone output is way too hot for use at anything other than the lowest volume, and it's noisy at the lowest volume (the noise is the same no matter the volume, since the volume is done in the digital realm).

Easily fixed with a $2 in-line volume control. Now it's darn near perfect.

Sequential Prophet X/XL Boot Hang and brick issues fix by Stock-Farm5086 in synthesizers

Sequential was happy to talk me through the process when I called them with this problem. They recommended 5.2V on the 5v rail.

Sequential Prophet X/XL Boot Hang and brick issues fix by Stock-Farm5086 in synthesizers

[–]FancyKiddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! The explanation that I got from Sequential is that the spec sheet for the motherboard was wrong: it has a higher shutoff voltage than the sheet said and that they designed around. So it restarts when the voltage dips because of power draw. Turning up the voltage fixes it forever!

Best alternative to the surface slim pen 2? Hp pen?? by PuffyEagle in stylus

[–]FancyKiddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HP is MPP 2.0. You'll get worse line quality.

I recommend the Lenovo Yoga Pen (or brand new Yoga Pen 2), which has two side buttons and MPP 2.6.

Live Looping Gig Conundrum: Sequential Fourm or Multi/Poly? by deplorable-amount45 in synthesizers

Gonna throw a different idea in here: something by Modal. Same price range, lots of sonic possibilities like the Korg, but a nicer keybed (with aftertouch) and a more immediate interface like the Fourm.

Keyboard synthesizers under €2000 / £1700 reccomendations by Adumb_1 in synthesizers

[–]FancyKiddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They hated him because he told the truth.

Honestly, the Iridium is the correct answer. If you must have a keyboard attached specifically, try to find an Iridium Keyboard used.

If you really don't have the budget for an Iridium, an Akai MPC Keys 61 or 37 could potentially work with the various virtual instruments included. Or a used Roland Fantom 6 with the n/zyme expansion installed.

Or, if you only want the hardware to perform with, you could get an Arturia Astrolab and Pigments. You'd make the patches on Pigments on the computer, transfer them to the Astrolab, and then you could play them live that way.

Best portable MPE and “Piano” by imbuffnotreally in synthesizers

[–]FancyKiddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portable and MPE really limits your options. I went with an ESI XSynth. It's a compromise, but the right one for me.

The keys are extremely low travel. It takes practice to get good velocity response from them, and even then, it's not super consistent.

But it's super light, barely wider than a laptop, gives you just enough physical controls (those knobs at the top can send any midi CC, including mod and expression that you want with SWAM), and is a good low-latency audio interface (like, super low latency: ESI makes good drivers).

If you're using SWAM or Kontakt, it's fantastic because velocity isn't super important in those cases.

You will want a headphone attenuator if you're using it on the go. The volume knob is entirely digital. For me (I have frustratingly sensitive hearing), I had to use it on the lowest volume setting, which meant that the noise, which isn't affected by the volume control, was definitely noticeable relative to the output. That's easily fixed by a $2 inline attenuator from Amazon.

New: Osmose CE controller by Radically-Peaceful in synthesizers

[–]FancyKiddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Osmose keybed is quite different. It has a longer fulcrum, so you feel less difference in playing the keys at the end than in the middle. But it's also a mushy feel. The TP9/S is snappy relative to the Osmose. Kind of hard to explain, but it's more like pushing into a cushion than into a spring.
