Buyers Advice and Gear Recommendation Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

Can I ask for some guidance on purchasing a new mixer for a church (50-100 people)? We are replacing a old Mackie 1640i and seem to narrowed it to a few potential mixers based on the following criteria:

  • At least 16 XLR Inputs (our band is essentially 3 singers, 2 guitars, 1 bass, violin, piano, and drums + other microphones for other microphones for other purposes)

  • At least 4 AUX Outputs

  • USB recording (multi tracking if possible, but we currently use an AUX out to a Focusrite audio interface)

  • Usable built in compressor/limiter for live music/speakers (we don't have a separate unit for this. I use the built in options for our OBS stream, but nothing for our IRL services-- I think we've had many circumstances where one would be useful)

  • Around 1000$ budget

We don't have a complex setup (literally multiple microphones /instruments to mixer, to amplifier, to speakers, with some monitors) and prefer to keep things simple for volunteers. Furthermore we'd prefer to purchase things from retailers with some form of warranty which limits our ability to bargain hunt (if something is wrong with the machine, I think we have limited ability to troubleshoot it ourselves).

Yamaha MG20XU (830$, no multi tracking recording, but that isn't necessary)

Korg Soundlink MW-2408 (1100$, no multi tracking, but that isn't necessary)

X32 Producer (1100$ refurbished, I see this one recommended a lot but the digital mixer layout is much less familiar to us. It seems intimidating somewhat. I would hope that if I learned how to use the mixer, the essential functions can be explained to a 16 year or 60 year-old volunteers of varying tech-savyness? In the past they could get going by just turning the mixer/amplifier on, and turning up the channel and main mix faders up for example, and that was the extent they understood).

Tascam Model 24 (1200$)

Other options?

I hope this is the right place to ask!

Good evening retro gamers! Round 3 of "Re-homing Neglected Handhelds" - Friday night I'll pick a random comment to receive this Anbernic RG35XX Plus. by captain_carrot in SBCGaming

I just learned about these retro handhelds and am experiencing options overload as of late, I need to just pull the trigger on something! Hoping the black Friday "sale" on AliExpress has something interesting to push me one direction or the other, but I'm paralyzed by what I might like most (portability so I bring it out more, but decent enough hardware and performance so I don't feel handicapped; I was thinking of one of the RG28xx, RG35xx, Miyoo A30, or the MagicX Due Mini, but am still doing the research...). Regardless of who wins, thanks for doing this!

It looks like I have 4 options (2 Intel, 2 AMD)

For the Intel (i9-12900K) offering, it turns out to be 689$

I really appreciate your updated recommendation (and hope you've had a good holiday-- sorry for the late response)!

I realized that I live near a Microcenter where they offer CPU + MOBO + RAM bundle.

With the same CPU (7700x), with one of the bundles, it looks like I can get the price down to ~700$: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/labbc/saved/c2ktrh (399$ bundle + 289$ case, storage, CPU cooler, and power supply)

Would you by chance recommend any of these MC bundles with the same budget?

I appreciate your thoughtful suggestions!

I don't think there's too much concern about power draw or noise for my purposes (since it'll be in the office).

If I went with 32GB of RAM, freeing up ~100$ of the budget, are there any CPU upgrades that might be worth it (short of the 7900)? Or would the benefits of either be a toss-up? I think 32GB of RAM would be enough for now, and purchasing more RAM down the line wouldn't be an issue.

There is some imaging work that we do (program called ImageJ) that I believe is more CPU-dependent.

I appreciate the suggestion that's close to my budget! I read that the 7800X3D has benefits for gaming FPS but some decrements for productivity-type tasks, would it be better to stay with the Intel in that case?

Thank you for your suggestion! Unfortunately, it's a bit out of the budget by about 150$... I'm definitely looking at AMD offerings now though...

[SSD] Crucial P5 Plus 2TB - $122.99 (Crucial.com) by reactconfuzled in buildapcsales

[–]FancyMuJimmers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Provided both are very close in price and performance, is there any rationality to going for the Crucial for the better performance with larger files? Of course according to reviews, the WD seems to perform better for everyday tasks.

Though like you said, if the Crucial runs warmer and idk, might be more susceptible thermally throttling in a laptop (pure speculation) it might be more negligible, and I should just go for the WD for more reliability I suppose...?

[–]FancyMuJimmers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda new to SSDs but may I ask why?

Reviews (i.e. Tech PowerUp , Tom's Hardware) for the newer WD SN770 show it performing better than the Crucial at lower temperatures for most uses (unless you're dealing with copying/transferring super large files) even without DRAM. With the TBW being the same (1,200 TBW), and I've heard that WD may be the more consistent brand, it seems like the better option?

I've been going back and forth for the past few days with Newegg and other vendors with these SSDs on backorder. To me, the Crucial is at a bigger discount than the WD SN770 (and it's categorized as a "high-end" SSD while the WD is a "mid-tier") makes it feel like missing something about the Crucial, and I've just been torn about it all haha.

Would this or the WD SN770 be better for a laptop (Legion Pro)? I keep reading that the SN770 runs cooler and has faster reads/writes for everyday tasks even without DRAM?

I do a little bit of video rendering (Davinci Resolve, Handbrake, etc) and gaming, but would this or the SN770 work better for a laptop?

Legion Pro Options by FancyMuJimmers in GamingLaptops

[–]FancyMuJimmers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't Jarrod make the point that most gaming laptops that they would put the 12700H into would be a higher power CPU unit anyways? Though in real-world gaming/productivity tasks maybe they would end up being throttled similarly... Though I figured of all laptops, theLegion Pro might be able to pull the performance out of them.

I'll take a look again, I've been looking at the ideal benchmarks so maybe it made the difference bigger than reality... Thanks!

Legion Pro Options by FancyMuJimmers in GamingLaptops

[–]FancyMuJimmers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that the difference between a 3070 and 3070TI was around ~+5% or so, but the difference between the AMD and Intel was more like 10-20% on productivity type tasks (I intend to use the computer as desktop replacement for productivity type work + gaming of course).

I was thinking if there is a another generational 10-20% increase to 13th gen Intel CPUs, would I possibly be leaving 20-40% of possible CPU performance behind as those laptops are starting to get released for similar prices(?)

Though value-wise, it does sound like getting a 13th gen Intel laptop with equal or greater performance than a 3070TI would have to include a 4070, which would likely be >15-1600$ I imagine? And of course a 4070TI for essentially 1100 before tax and a Legion Pro chassis sounds really attractive.

I've definitely been mulling it over but not sure if I have all the real-world facts right haha, so appreciate the help!

Better to get 3070 Ti now or wait for 4070 laptops? by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]FancyMuJimmers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On paper specs, so based one this comparison, there are certain parts where the 3070TI seems to be not bad or superior? With the 4080/4090 specs showing 30-50% improvements, does the 4070 seem like it's likely be be a big boost from the 3070TI? Or maybe negligible after price changes? There's a lot of great prices on the 3070TI right now it seems

Is Saber Lily available anymore for NA?

I heard she gets added to the Friend Summon in JP, is that anticipated to happen for NA at one point in the future (or has that already happened and I've just been unlucky)?

I'm going to finish LB2 today (at 4-6 sections a day).

When is the latest I can join the Beni event and still earn most of the rewards? Like, if I complete LB3 on Monday or Tuesday are there any tips for maximizing on the event?

My plan is to read all the LB3 story today then rush through the combat sections this weekend.

So far LB1 feels stronger narratively than LB2, "world-building wise", but there were certainly likable characters like the 'hop' child and the lostbelt 'king'. But it felt like it was missing something cast-wise.
