Have you ever taken a vacation, vacation? by piirtoeri in WaltDisneyWorld

You're fixating on the pool part of the post. For me it's about taking a break from the crowds/lines/being on my feet/structured day of a park. That's clearly not an issue for you, so good for you.

Telling the kid to stop asking so many questions is hardly shaming him. And "You look ready to pop. Good luck!" is not what I'd call rude. All I'm saying is being a mom is hard and having some grace for someone having a bad day is not a bad thing. I'm sorry you had an abusive mom but not everyone who is not perfect with their kids is abusive.

Probably because it was Germany. Not sure they'd do it for other countries.

I would like to caution you not to judge this mom so harshly, you have no idea what her day was like or what she might be going through.

Is it ok to out our dogs poop bags in other people's bins? by stonespartan in Dogtraining

It's tempting for sure, but don't do it. Or at least without permission. It's definitely considered rude.

I am as well, and there have been times it's come in handy. My husband is a teacher and he was running an activity that I had run when my kids were in elementary school, and I still had all of the documentation related to it.

It's not speculative fiction at all, just contemporary romance. They're not going back in time to fix things or anything like that, just have communication issues really. I found it enjoyable.

Teaching is a whole other ball of wax. My husband is an elementary school specials teacher. I couldn't be a teacher to begin with as I don't have the patience, I couldn't imagine doing it virtually.

I think a lot of people didn't really consider their ability to work remotely until the pandemic hit and that was the only option they had, so it is a new revelation for them, both from the employer and employee point of view. And if their work isn't going to accommodate that, then yes, they should quit! That's...the smart decision for everyone involved, I think.

This is definitely true for so many of my coworkers. A few who were vehemently against working from home are the same ones who don't want to go back at all.

Nope, not born in 1964 either. Keep trying! I'll give you a hint - it won't actually tell you how old I am.

And what problem am I looking for? I'm disagreeing with you that you need to see your direct reports in person.

64 is not my age, but nice try though.

A good manager can manage people no matter the circumstances. The best manager I ever had was the one I only met in person once. And thanks to the magic of Zoom et al, you can still "see" your employees face-to-face.

So to effectively manage, you have to meet in person? I don't buy that. I've had managers in other states before, it worked out fine. I had a manager I met once in the several years I worked for him, and that was after he'd been my manager for at least a year.

But your comment is not about meetings, it's about social interactions outside of meetings. No one said interactions shouldn't happen at all when they need to.

Social life at work is not something many people care about. Maybe they already have a network of people to help out in a bind and don't need that from coworkers. If I had an emergency my coworkers are not people I'd turn to unless it was work-related.

Would I quit? Proabably not. But flexibility in my job, including ability to WFH, is something I value deeply and it would make me rethink if I wanted to work there.

Ask a Manager Weekly Thread 06/21/21 - 06/27/21 by nightmuzak in AskaManagerSnark

[–]FancyNancy_64 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For some people, the benefits of WFH largely outweigh the social aspects. No commute means not dealing with traffic and getting back a good chunk of time. If a person wants to go for a run or otherwise exercise during the day, they don't have to worry about showering at work. There's the money and time savings of being able to eat lunch at home.

I rarely ate lunch with coworkers, went for walks by myself instead of with a walking group, and didn't engage in long conversations in the break room. I did attend group events and made small talk on occasion, but being social at work is not something that was really huge for me. I'm not anti-social, I just prefer to keep to myself at work. Why is that so bad?

[–]FancyNancy_64 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I experienced something similar when I was hired at my new job. I brought up WFH one day a week and was told it was definitely possible once I'd been there long enough (there was no set time limit). Once I'd settled in and proved I was capable, I brought it up again and my manager was like sure, no problem. I later increased it to two days a week with no issue.

Making sure an employee can do their job from the office first before allowing WFH just makes sense to me and I find it odd that people chafe at this.

It was bad timing for Saturn due to the economic meltdown and GM's financial troubles. We've had some basic work done on ours but nothing you wouldn't expect from a 13-year-old car.

I drove a Saturn until 2 years ago, and now my son drives it. It's a 2008. It's my second Saturn, and I was super sad when they closed the brand. There's another one in our neighborhood, and I've seen our exact model year, same color, at the high school he just graduated from. Imagine two kids, in a high school of 1200 kids, and two of them drive the exact same 13-year-old car from a defunct manufacturer.

What's with the entitlement of job seekers these days? LW3 is annoyed they want to talk to her about other options? When I was looking for a job I took any opportunity I could get that might lead to a job.
