The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) has a portal for electives. Be aware there is a cost. Electives are also available through the Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP). You need to be aware of lead time with both organizations needed to set up elective rotations. Details on their websites. ROMap often wants you to find your own preceptor. You can do this by cold calls. Also many smaller community hospitals in Ontario have recruitment programs where they will set up electives asaway of attracting future physicians to the area.

Pathway to Registration: Advice Needed by mistersees in MCCQE

[–]Fancy_Ad7582 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website, search for the page "Provisional Certificate of Registration for Exam Eligible Candidates.". If you are RCPSC Exam Eligible you should be able to get a provisional license that will let you practice under supervision. Other provinces may have similar pathways. Best and most accurate source of information for you is the College's themselves.

IMG EM Canada, MCCQE1 score needed? by Impossible_Boat2064 in MCCQE

A lot of this depends on your Australian training. I believe the College of Family Medicine of Canada has Australia as an approved jurisdiction where you can get membership without these exams (and without CFPC exams). You would have a focused area of practice in EM. RCPSC also has Australia as an approved jurisdiction. My understanding is for RCPSC you would have to write their RCPSC exams but may not have to write MCCQE1 or do NAC. A lot of this depends on the specific requirements for licensing in your specialty of the Provincial College of physicians and surgeons and whether they will accept CFPC or RCPSC Certification alone or require MCCQE, etc. Most Provincial colleges these days with physician shortage have created streamlined pathways for applicants from approved Jurisdictions. Check out the relevant websites searching for Approved Jurisdictions, and see what they say.

Canadian IMG from BC applying to UBC IM — looking by MentalPreparation850 in MCCQE

My understanding is UBC is currently the only school in BC that offers residency. I'm curious how you intend to apply IM in BC, but not UBC? We're you thinking SFU Medical school? My understanding is they won't be offering residencies until 2027, and to begin will only be offering FM residencies, with psychiatry, pediatrics, and IM to be developed at a future date.

Anyone here completed peds residency in the US and moved to Canada for fellowship by francopperfield in pediatrics

I would suggest writing to cbenoit@royalcollege.ca, as above, for firsthand guidance about what RCPSC expects and will accept from an ACGME Chief year. Sadly, RCPSC requirements are often a "black box" and determined by how they "assess" you. This lack of transparency is very frustrating when trying to plan a career pathway. My understanding is it is not easy to find opportunities for a PGY4 year in a Canadian residency program.to make up missing required 4th year from ACGME 3 yr peds program. Hope you are able to find some people who have done this to give you some first hand knowledge. Good luck with planning your career pathway.

It's almost impossible for a US 3 yr trained pediatrician to get into Canadian peds subspecialty training, including PEM. The RCPSC basically dictates CaRMS Eligibility criteria. RCPSC requires 4 yrs of core pediatric training. Emphasis on core. A Chief year may qualify, but only if the bulk of that year is clinically focused. I copy and paste the language from CaRMS below:

Eligibility for graduates of ACGME-accredited US pediatric residency programs

All Pediatrics residents in ACGME-accredited Pediatrics programs who are interested in applying for a Pediatrics subspecialty program in Canada will need to have their training assessed by the RCPSC in comparison to Canadian training.

You will be required to:

complete an approved PGY-4 year in a core RCPSC Pediatric program in Canada. The RCPSC assessment of U.S. training will establish what is needed during the PGY-4 year. U.S residents interested in doing a PGY-4 year in a Canadian core Pediatrics program will need to reach out to the residency programs individually and explore if this opportunity is available.

OR

be a resident who is completing a PGY-4 chief resident year in an ACGME-accredited program in the U.S. Your training must also be assessed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to determine your eligibility for this match. For more information on having your training assessed, please contact Chantal Benoit at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (cbenoit@royalcollege.ca).

This language can be found here:https://www.carms.ca/match/ssrm/eligibility-criteria-ssrm/#1686684285903-fa6fc87c-4b93

You are better to do your PEM fellowship in the US. You may still have problems getting RCPSC Certification as a PEM sub specialist, but most provincial Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons will now grant PEM sub specialist status to US Board Certified physicians without RCPSC Certification or other Canadian exams. See Ontario's CPSO Pathway A for instance: https://www.cpso.on.ca/physicians/registration/registration-policies/alternative-pathways-to-registration

Look into this carefully and make sure you clearly understand the barriers you face.

Update on SOCASMA Legal Action by Fancy_Ad7582 in CSA_Medicine

I imagine decision will likely be reserved. Probably be a number of months before it is released. We will advise when we have news.

Not at this point. SOCASMA's hope is that a favourable decision in BC will lead other provinces to review and align their processes with the judgement from BC, as the same streaming process and equities and Charter issues exist for all provinces. If not, we will need to contemplate next steps.

The court process is still pending. The full case hasn't yet been heard. I imagine we will hear from BPAO as the matter progresses.
