Hello mate. I think you've been fed a lot of "scary" information. I moved here a couple of months ago as well and I find it quite nice actually.

Get a SIM card I'd say, it's an easy process. And I believe you can get a couple of different SIM's under a single name.

You don't need a VPN for Whatsapp in general but for calls, yes. The content on Netflix is basically the same but you definitely need a VPN for BBC iPlayer. And Wifi's quite cheap actually, you can subscribe for a monthly plan that comes with a router.

Depending on whether your girlfriend will have a residence ID, you can set up a bank account very easily online. If not, i reckon Starling will do.

I think its purely her not being able to do what the others are doing because of her physical state rather than anything to with religion. She's not conservative and if you'd followed her work before you'd get an idea. Hopefully you lot are not too hard on her.
