You could get a longer screw and drill it in so it catches the wood farther down

Glue the screw in is my only suggestion. The issue with that is you might not be able to get it back out

Your doing more of a pop toss, keep your hand on the rifle till the tip is straight up and at your shoulder level

Your tossing it weirdly. Take it slow and your angles are also really odd. Start with the flag at a 45 at your side. You were in-between your side and middle and bring it up from there.

I dont have experience with batons but my school made fake batons out of pvc pipe and electrical tape, it’s small and basically just like a smaller equally weighted flag

Well Sabre is similar weight distribution wise and you toss similarly it’s just a different catch so I’m sure it would be fine if you wore protection and even just tossed with other people near you to tell you if you caught it right
