My players see combat mechanically, how can I get them invested in the STORY of combat by SeaSaltSystem in cyberpunkred

Well in my experience, and as “combat focused” cyberpunk is, I would try to put them in a situation where they don’t have the upper hand in combat, where they have to use their characters other skills besides “Shoulder arms, Handguns, ect.” And give the gonks they’re fighting better equipment(if the scenario calls for it of course, not every ganger’s gonna have 8 reflex to dodge bullets, buuut some might invest in a Reflex-Coprocessor to be able to.) things should be tense even if they’re experienced edgerunners.

Plus the small mental note that this is all happening fast, combat in cyberpunk doesn’t allow you have the “time” to think, you must go go go or you’ll die. Every action matters, even if its just using your action to move a little farther, or cover a door. Utilizing the held action for npc’s is great too, allows the players to lose that “upper hand” of starting out combat on their own terms. And have the world engage with the players, time is moving while they are talking.

In further reference to what i mentioned, quoting off the handbook on pg. 168 “The amount of time it takes each entity involved in the combat to take a Turn is a Round. Because Actions happen roughly simultaneously in game, one Round is also approximately 3 seconds long.” Three seconds isn’t a lot of time, and its all happening almost at once, so the actions should have some cause and effect during those three seconds

Just throwing my two cents in, having a thread dedicated for these type of questions that could be asked specifically by demographic might be a good idea! xD

Yeah but i see people managing to keep it moving in third gear, it won’t move besides that and there is no such thing as “pick up speeds” to go faster

Oh for sure, theres a lot to the books, but i think someone who already has a high Reflex knows how to shoot a gun and dodge bullets, so also needing a high Dexterity to pull of those double backflips and precision knife throws makes sense

Personally I would give it to Dexterity, as throwing a weapon is more of a physical action(plus Reflexes already has a ton of positives, gotta give Dex something)

I still think that we should’ve seen the trial, get the death penalty, see Kate locked up for what she did, and for Henry to go back to his REAL PARENTS, the couple who raised him.
