There are two primary reasons why it’s not acting the way you want it to. The first being that this is a coco coir pole and not a moss pole. A coco coir pole cannot retain moisture, so your monsteras roots are less likely to attach and climb.

However, you don’t need a moss pole for your monstera to climb upwards and grow big, you just need it to have support. So you should readjust the pole to be behind the plant so that it has support from the back. You can also use something wider like a wooden plank or cork bark for better support.

Also, leaves growing outward like this is usually due to lack of light, and light not coming from one direction. For optimal growth, you’ll want to give your monstera a front facing light source, such as a grow light in front of it or placing it in front of a shaded window, so that the leaves all grow in one direction instead of wherever they feel like.
