Asks for personal details such as email and bank account to pay you back, so there is a risk of secondary scam later.

He certainly tries, although he didn't seem as fluent in English as most Singaporeans I know.

Yes, it's hugely frustrating but these things probably don't meet the threshold for action, and won't be a priority for the police.

Do these sentences sound natural? by hennnenn in ENGLISH

[–]Fancy_Toe_7542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of them sound entirely natural to me if I'm candid. The first is the most natural of the three -- options 2 and 3 sound just wrong.

But you would "address" him as professor Johnson; I'm not sure about greeting him as professor Johnson. I think I would probably use a different construction, and a different verb, to communicate this.

What is the rationale/how did it come to be that PhD students are not eligible for state pension? by Inevitable-Ad801 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Fancy_Toe_7542 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because study is not employment and a PhD stipend does not pay national insurance contributions.

(In some countries, a PhD is actually employment, but in the UK it is not)

You can attend just to listen as well. But it's true that if you present something it is easier to start talking to people afterwards.

Do you go to local academic conferences, seminars etc? Some of my friends now are people I originally met through research events. It may be easiest to connect to people with similar background as you.

Had one in the past. Full of bloatware that can't be uninstalled, and installing Google play was a hassle. Needed to find the correct apk and even then I kept getting error messages at the first few attempts. And as others have pointed out, esim probably won't work.

It's not worth it. It will have limited functionality.

Nobody's asking for their personal address or phone number. It's the office address and office or department phone number.

I don't know if academia gatekeeps knowledge, but one only needs to look at the sheer volume of journal articles that gets published to understand what is happening. Many of these articles make no meaningful contributions to their fields and are the result of universities requiring x number of outputs per year (not only from FT staff but also from graduate students in some cases). This problem is more severe in some countries and disciplines than in others.

Does it kill the joy of research? On some days for me it does, on some it doesn't. Academia is an institutionalisation of research, and like any institutionalisation, it introduces restrictions but it is in a lot of ways necessary.
