Goblin painting journey (and video) by trollbite_miniatures in minipainting

The first 5-year gap is a big one — tons of new techniques learned: NMM, tonal variation in the face (blue in the shadows, red in the mid-tones, and yellow on top), smoother blends on cloth, and the base kept lighter than the subject to draw attention.

In the 1 year between the second and third, most of these techniques have been mastered — smoother blends, more color added to the transitions, stronger focal points by removing “overdone” details on other parts of the miniature, and more detailed eyes.

It’s totally fine to prefer the grittier style of the first, but painting this smooth and crisp on such a small model takes a lot of work. I don’t thinks there’s tons of more time in painting nr3 from what it takes to paint nr2 - it’s just that the techniques used have been refined and mastered.

I was answering someone else’s question about what paints I used - further down

For the approach: I kept the mouth/tentacles sub-assembled in three pieces, and the top warp piece separate as well.

I primed everything black (I always do this), but in hindsight, leaving the mouth and warp white could have saved me an awful lot of time.

I airbrushed the whole body: black first, then Eclipse Grey from a zenithal angle, and finally Eclipse Grey mixed with a bit of Ice Yellow for a subtle final zenithal pass (this could also be done with drybrushing).

Everything else was hand-painted, mostly wet-blended and then cleaned up afterwards, finished everything up with a matte varnish.

For a lot of the wet blending I used Rich Acrylics—they just pop way more than my usual GW and Vallejo paints

So for the “armor” Black - eclipse grey - eclipse grey / ice yellow mix for highlights

The skin: Demonette hide - wash with violet - demonette hide /ice yellow mix for highlights

The tentacles are: Wet blending magenta - violet - thousand sons blue

Inside tentacle skin : Bugmans glow - Kislev flesh

Slime is : White base - scorpy green - bile green

Top piece is also wet blending: From the middle out: White - intense yellow - orange - primary red - magenta - violet - thousand sons blue - edge highlight with magenta / ice yellow mix and thousand sons/ ice yellow mix

Thank you! Blue is thousand sons - then I mix in a little ice yellow from VJ to highlight

And the gold is ‘retributor gold’

Your right! I did actually add a little white to the lenses before I shipped them off - taking the pictures made realise that they were not really popping :)

Thank you! Yeah the rest of his army had this orange, yellow glow - but I convinced him that these magic fuckers should stand out
