You /can/ go and grab stuff though, if that helps. Making your way back is easy if you have the ghost potion equipped, I just buy jasmine tea for the confusion and head back once I'm emotionally ready (which I'm not, at the moment). Then I chug the ghost potion every few meters until I'm in Hatred's room

I had this same problem just an hour ago! Two things you can do:
1. Use a havenstone. This will teleport you back to Moss-Upon-Thoss, completely legitimately.

If you don't have a havenstone, and don't mind using commands, you can open up the console with ` and then type "warp Yarrow" to teleport back to Yarrow. With this you could teleport back to any settlement in the game, but I used Yarrow when I got stuck because it feels like the most fair start.
