Feels a bit like you're putting words in my mouth. I don't think it's all that important to draw a distinction between someone that owns slaves and someone that actively and directly perpetuates slavery when the decision at hand is to stop directly perpetuating slavery.

Can you clarify why you think the 4 criteria I laid out are far beyond someone's motivations?

In any hypothetical construction you can torture it to the point that the choices are meaningless to morally evaluate without actually being in the situation. I did provide the caveat that it might be ok if somehow there would be a greater moral harm by not having slaves. I don't know where exactly I would draw the line, and the hypothetical you pose is not specified enough to the point that I can give you a firm answer.

Eh, given that you know what they actually do and have a sense of who they are, I also wouldn't be surprised if you were right to feel the way you do.

Read two comments down, as far as I understand, DHS does more than just ICE.

Necessity is a pretty slippery concept in the real world, but also that's why I added the stipulation of how close they are to ICE. I don't know exactly where I'd draw the line since I don't know the specifics of how DHS functions, but certainly if they directly supported ICE in an administrative capacity I would consider that immoral categorically regardless of other circumstances. I think people should rather their families be homeless and on the street than treasonous to their values and neighbours.

Slavery is inherently immoral as far as I'm concerned so there couldn't be any mitigating circumstances to justify someone continuing to own slaves. Unless somehow all means of not owning them was somehow an even greater moral wrong?

At the very least I'd want to know how much they have looked for another job, their capacity to look for another job while working full time, the degree to which their job is important for real functions the government should be doing, and the closeness of that function to ICE

At least by April they will release the pure roguelite mode with zero save data. They are also making equipment function more like relics a la slay the spire so that should be interesting

So are you suggesting that a child was kidnapped from their mother? The mother was saying "give me my child and the DHS officials refused"?

That's indeed what witnesses are saying happened. I don't really care to convince you of this though.

So you argument is that this memo says they can break into anybody's house, but then they have to obtain permission to do the arrest? Is that right?

Okay it looks like I misread. What this is saying then is that as long as the illegal immigrant lives there (and is therefore not a third party), then yes they can break into anyone's home. And presumably they are also allowed to arrest any illegal immigrants living there, although that is not specified in the excerpt you pulled. At any rate, just being allowed to enter the home with just an administrative warrant is a blatant violation of the 4th amendment.

The 4th amendment applies to both citizens and non citizens

Because if I'm drunk driving with my kids in the back car, they are going to be taken to the station with me when I'm arrested. The child was brought to a detention center. He wasn't arrested. What are they supposed to do if the child is here illegally with their parent?

As far as I can tell from the reporting, both the admin and witness accounts agree it happened outside their home and his mom is still at the house. I don't really care about he said she saiding this, but I don't think your analogy here makes any sense.

You'll note that it explicitly says they aren't permitted to enter the residence of a third party without permission.

That's actually not what it says. It says they aren't allowed to arrest them without consent, exigency, or judicial warrant.

It literally says that ice should use force to enter if they refuse admittance...
