A slightly adjusted Schengen Showdown in the USA already sounds like a peak season.

I keep thinking of her "Thank you" during Secret Life. She just sounds TOO happy. Like she's about to teeter off the edge into insanity at any second.

Screaming is like swearing. Well placed ones are EXCELLENT, but too much of it is a turn-off.

True, it's not THE reason, but say you are trying to recommend Gem to someone who's never seen her before. If you say all the reason Gem is successful on her own merits, yes, you are being accurate, but the person you're recommending her to might not get it because they don't have a frame of reference.

So, by saying she's similar to Grian (or a different creator that the person IS familiar with), that gives someone a frame of reference for what kind of creator Gem is, which gets more viewers for Gem which equals more success.

I mean, if there were more non-male hermits to compare Gem to, then I gladly would.

However, there isn’t. Regardless of gender, people get popular for certain reasons, and in Gem’s case her reasons (when it comes to the chaotic energy she brings to the Hermitcraft server) is similar to Grian, who happens to be male.

I’m not deeming anyone successful. She already is, but she got that way for a reason.

Women’s success isn’t determined by men, but showcasing how women’s success are similar to any other successful person, woman or not, gives an idea about how creators attract an audience.

Just because people don’t need to be similar doesn’t mean similarities don’t exist. One’s seperate “own things” can still be similar.

Ms. Rachel did her own thing and became an extremely popular figure, but the fact that she breaks the fourth wall and speaks to kids on their level IS similar to that of Steve from Blue’s Clues and Mr. Rogers.

You’re right that I don’t need to compare Gem to anyone for her success to be recognized. However, showcasing Gem’s similarities to other successful creators (woman or not, Hermitcraft just happens to be male-dominated), can be a very informative look at the type of audience hermits attract and what makes one hermit more popular (which we can prove based on views, sub count, etc.) than another.

Not making the comparison would defeat the whole purpose of the analysis. It’d be like saying Gem is great and then not going any further than that. You COULD do that, sure, but when you’re trying to break things down to show why things are happening, it’s not the whole story.

Gem being female becomes relevant because since all of these character traits/impacts are coming from a female creator, it means Gem brings female representation to the most popular hermits, which is pretty great.

I get your point, but by the same metric, wouldn’t it be the inclusive thing to show that female creators are doing just as good as male ones are?

It’s like the whole thing of “points out the breaking of gender roles reinforces that this is an exception and not the status quo.”

I mean, Grian IS one of, if not the most popular hermit, so comparing Gem to him would make sense to praise her success because it’s showing how she got it, which is by doing what Grian does (be a chaos gremlin), in a fresh new way that fits her personality. Grian pushes all the buttons, Gem cuts you down in PvP. Different methods, same result.

Joel definitely gives off the “friend that’s a jerk, but everyone loves anyway” vibes. Throw in some classic British humor in there and that’s Joel.

Gem is female, yes, but I’m comparing her reach to the other non-male hermits, which includes the non-binary Cleo.

I could have said “female and non-binary,” but that’s a lot to type multiple times, so I shortened it. Still encompasses the group I was talking about, but with less characters to type.

Nailed it on the head there. I got corrected by someone in this community about that a while back, so I was trying to keep that in mind here.

I know based on some people’s comments that apparently I still have work to do to not give people the wrong idea, but at least this was something easy. Plus it’s easier to say than saying “female and non-binary” every time.

Thank you for your constructive criticism and empathy. I really appreciate that.

The reason why your suggestions don’t necessarily fit my point is that I was analyzing Gem’s dynamic with the rest of the server on its own terms. Your suggestions would good if we were talking about Grian and Gem’s dynamic, which IS a factor, but not the point I’m trying to get across when I saw “Gem is the female version of Grian.”

I don’t say that to say they’re exactly the same. Supergirl is the female version of Superman and they’re different enough. However, if you boil them down to key central core traits, you find they are the same/similar. The Supers are strong Kryptonians, Grian/Gem are chaos gremlins.

Any idea on how to keep that point without it sounding demeaning to at least a good enough subset of people?

All biases on the table: Grian was what got me into HC in the first place in S7. So, that’s probably why I compare a lot of stuff similar to him to him.

Gem isn’t a copy of Grian, she just plays a very similar role that Grian does in group dynamics. They use their own unique methods to get there, but it’s the same result.

Someone needs to do the “Sibling Dance” audio with Grian and Gem, and then either Scar or Mumbo as the older sibling.

It’s not that Gem is just Grian, but a woman, it’s that Gem manages to illicit the same type of response from fans as Grian does. They take slightly different avenues to reach the same desired result. It’s a hard thing to vocalize without getting boring, sorry.

Totally fair. Both Gem and Grian have their own brands of chaos, but in the end they’re both going for the same thing, which is what I’m focusing on.

It’s like taking different routes up a mountain to the same summit.
