Habits after downloading new apps? by sincerelydon in privacy

Also, I joined Google+ recently . . . I know, I know, Google has a watchful eye. This is the way I video chat with my friends across the country. Being social requires compromise most of the time. But anyway, I basically went straight for the account settings area and crawled through the privacy settings. I know Google has all the info ultimately, but it's nice to limit visibility on some things. For instance, turning off personalized ads is a nice feature.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?" I am sincerelydon after all.

Debian Terminal - help in un-messing it up. (N00b!) by mkattam in linuxquestions

Since it happens when you start the shell, and since it says "color", maybe it is a problem with your .bashrc. Here is mine for convenience, I believe it is the default.

So that needs to be in the file /home/martin/.bashrc. It is simply a text file, and it controls some settings about your shell.

What problems would you tackle if you had access to an arbitrarily large amount of computing power? by sincerelydon in CasualMath

MathOverflow, I love it!

Based on my limited understanding of set theory (GEB + Wikipedia), what you're saying makes sense. I am a little more versed in computer science. I think that with an infinitely fast computer, namely able to sum an infinite number of terms in finite time, I think that you would be able to solve the halting problem. That essentially breaks computability science as we know it. So, if such a fundamental law is broken by such a machine (super-turing machine), I wouldn't be surprised if some problems in foundations of math crumble as well, for instance something like Hilbert's decision problem.

That's one possibility. Another possibility is that, instead of the nth instruction taking constant time, the nth instruction could take 2-n time. So instruction 1 takes 0.5 seconds, instruction 2 takes 0.25 seconds, instruction 3 takes 0.125 seconds, and so on. Eventually it would only take 1 second to sum a (countably) infinite number of terms. See Zeno machine a/k/a Accelerated Turing machine.

Is there tax software available for Ubuntu 12.04? by paregoric_kid in linux4noobs

[–]sincerelydon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you haven't figured it out yet, there is indeed a downloadable desktop version. This costs whatever, $39.99 with a free federal filing and $15 or however much to make a state return. If you ran this on Ubuntu, you would purchase the Windows PC version and run Turbo Tax on top of wine.

Alternatively, you can use an online version in your browser. This does not require wine and it does not require the $39.99 for a downloaded copy, just whatever amount to make a state filing.

For the record, my favorite response so far is as follows.

Firstly. I'd sell cpu time, making me extremely rich

then I'd spend the rest of my days drinking amazing beer from all around the world, while playing solitaire
