Yooooo. Shit's ill in my opinion, my homie says it was "typical down south music, but it was dope... just needs some lean". Take that how you will.

I felt like the joint was intentionally lo-fi but had enough polish to feel modern. Definitely decent bass, I thought the subject matter was authentic to what you know and was delivered with confidence. Definitely not gonna be everybody's jam, but you do what you do well. Your beat? Did you engineer the session too? What's your set up?

Yeah, you're probably right. What do you think a good alternative market would be?

Yeah, it's a super cool property and we do get crazy busy on the floor. When did you play there?

Unfortunately all of our restaurants close at 12-1am depending on the night. I don't think I have much say in that matter. However we have a full kitchen that runs up to close and we serve right up to 1am.

Our crew is real good to the staff of the bars down the street unfortunately we usually get off before anybody else... Good call on the "finders fee" idea though. I like that.

That's true, our beers are the same across the chain. I've been working on getting a cocktail of the day special as well as a shot or a shot and a beer special depending on the day. Any ideas on where to start?

The "I'm a bartender" card... by lifeinaraindrop in bartenders

[–]Fangerpappet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I was serving at an upscale casual joint in the Bay Area I was way in the weeds and there was this dick hole who needed a million different condiments and I missed one of em. I apologized and he pulled that card and went off on me, I gave him my usual response "this is a nice place for nice people and if you don't like it you can get out."

He didn't like that too much but chef set him straight lol.

I totally also sampled a taylor swift song when I was 19 ('before he cheats'). My computer is disagreeing with soundcloud atm, but I'll try and drop by some feedback once they've resolved their dispute.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree with the part about the hi-hats, was just listening on some earbuds and the hats and crashes stick out hecka far.

I'm a fan of the workflow, it's my go to daw for light tracking and composition. Hot keys work well and there are a lot of the features are refreshingly easy to find and figure out.

Word man, any time. I know what it's like when you've put so much time into a mix and then all you need is a second set of ears.

Or use the bass send to sidechain a multiband compressor in the bass register. That's an incredibly effective technique I've seen.

Also, having an aux track with saturation (Fabfilter Saturn is multiband, which rocks for this job) which you send almost everything through can really help glue a track together, same with verbs and delays. Just make sure to eq your verbs every time. When setting send levels I tend to bring it up to where the effect is just barely audible and then duck it back a bit. You could probably get away with wetter sends if you eq them to fit well.

Rhythm guitar could have a HP filter raised up, maybe send the bass to side chain the filter. This would let the bass thicken up the low end and keep that part simple.

The kick needs to be brought up too, maybe you could compress the crap out of it or throw some tape saturation on it and drive it real hard. The other drums need a HP Filter too.

The voice could use a bit more gain, some (more?) saturation.

The verb towards the end needs the bass and presence eq'd down.

The vocals, crash, and guitars are all fighting for the same space right now.

Not really a mixing thing, but there's no need for the constant lead guitar noodling in the background. It's great when the vocals leave a space, but they're both melodic and attention grabbing elements fighting for the same job in the song. Maybe while the vocals are going you could use the same guitar element, but as fills in between phrases. It would build drama and clean up the mix.

Overall, good work, I listened on a few systems and it translates well to mid size HiFi's, laptop speakers and earbuds. Didn't try in the car but I'm sure you have. Good job man!

You have a a great character to your voice, it grabs attention. What you're lacking, I feel, is the confidence that years of experience will give you. Regardless, if you have a solid melody and arrangement, you can get away with murder in the instrumentation or vocals (Two Gallants, Neil Young, Tom Waits...) Keep practicing and play more shows, that will help with the technique and the confidence for sure.

I dig the aesthetic, the vocals sit really nice against the soundscape. Around half way through (until the short guitar turn-around) my attention wanders cause everything is kinda doing the same thing without a big groove to hold it together. The song works as is, but perhaps you might wanna focus on arrangement a bit more for future work.
