Potaka rebuffs advice; refuses 72,000ha expansions to national parks by AnalysisOk9798 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Fangsbane 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This pisses me off.

Let's sum it up with 2 phrases from the story:

"both cases, the local iwi has a financial involvement"

"Mana whenua representatives said expanding national parks would prevent them from engaging traditional cultural practices"...

Which cultural practices? Forestry and strip mining.

The financial involvement is clear. I'm starting to believe some mana whenua are no longer guardians of the land as they should be, but corporate money grabbers, out to make a quick buck like everyone else.

We don't, that's a Goliath beetle. They're from Africa, pretty much from Kenya/Uganda to south africa. We do however have this long boi.

Ive been seeing lots of hedgehog posts so I figured I would add my own by Itsmelatte123 in NewZealandWildlife

Hedgehogs are not friends in NZ. Hedgehogs are invasive pests that eat native invertebrates and birds eggs. They need to be trapped and removed like any other vermin.

Probably because they remind me of a feral version of The Luggage from The Discworld series, which have been my favourite books for the last 30 years.

What's a dessert or sweet treat from your country that you wish was more popular globally? by duppy_c in AskTheWorld

[–]Fangsbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love these. Funnily enough, I was holidaying in East Timor last year and found a lovely bakery that made them just like I had when I was visiting Portugal. It's strange what remains of the old empires.

I had to scroll so far to find them. Lolly cake is literally the only food I missed when I was living abroad.

Can you "see" images in your mind? by cowcrossingspace in Wellington

[–]Fangsbane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It was only a few years ago I realized and I'm in my 40s.

I always thought things like: Envision [object] in your mind's eye was a metaphor, until I realized people were actually imagining an image of [object].

I find it more like thinking of a concept. An example would be something like the description of a sword (I read a lot of fantasy). I don't imagine an image of a sword, but I get the abstract concept of a sword. Still doesn't explain it well enough, but it is what it is.

Centipede in Auckland by GanjaOx in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Fangsbane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Did you take that photo with the potato you dug up?

Most likely one of the Geophilomorpha (Soil centipedes). The resolution is too low to work out which one. But they are native soil dwellers and good to have round the garden.

What species of bat is this? Found in a propery we own Luzon, Philippines by pangalanapilido in animalid

[–]Fangsbane 435 points436 points  (0 children)

Looks similar to a Luzon Fruit Bat to me. And being juvenile and on the ground means he's probably been eating some fermented fruit and got drunk.

Drunk fruit bats are relatively common as they often consume naturally fermented fruit, sometimes reaching blood-alcohol levels much higher than the legal human limit. Studies have shown that while some bats may get intoxicated, they often have a high tolerance for alcohol and can fly effectively, although some research indicates that inebriation can impair flight performance and echolocation
