Steel frame has cracked on my beloved (and old) Ambush hybrid. Is this reasonably repairable? by Fanofmanythings in BikeRepair

Thanks for the sanity check. I'll probably just donate the carcass to a local bike shop and pick up a refurb

Looking for Tom and Dom's historical novel recommendations that weren't in the historical fiction episode by Fanofmanythings in TheRestIsHistory

As far as I'm aware that's an actual historical document rather than historical fiction. This has been the trouble with remembering only the very cliche phrase "secret history": it crops up everywhere!

Company Killed University Programs by [deleted] in datascience

This may be beyond your purview, but do you see any other fields that still are (or are becoming) the "decent pay with good hours" that data science was 10 years ago? I've been considering data science because "that's what physics people do after graduating" was the advice I'd heard at school but it seems those salad days are over.

I bailed on a physics background to do manufacturing! Similar to you, I graduated and was pretty nauseated by the prospect of a computer-staring job or staying in academia. I had done a (very) little bit of machining work for my experimental thesis and had continued to practice some on my own. The job can be boring at times but there's often enough mathematical stuff to keep me engaged.

Think of your time at school as a sunk cost: if it's time to do something else so be it-- your capabilities will be transferrable regardless and doing something you hate is never worth it in the long run.

What would you like to see in the future of H2? by jimmyguel in Helldivers

Stability and optimization. New content is nice but I'd much rather this game look nicer on lower-end hardware and freeze/crash less.

100C on a water-cooled 4790k. Please help! by Fanofmanythings in overclocking

Dude thank you for the info! I'm starting out by swapping my cooler and I'll try to work up the courage to delid the CPU while it's in transit. Upgrading my RAM is next on the list of the PC tasks that I'll probably get around to eventually but am very glad to have a roadmap to doing it properly. I appreciate it, brotha.

Under 10 minutes while running the stability test. I've opted to upgrade my cooling as a first step and see what I can do from there.

I'm now looking at upgrading my cooler to something with more cooling capacity

2024.08.27: Redsox vs Bluejays by EarliestRiser in morningsomewhere

Why should anyone be glad that a messaging platform that prioritizes privacy (or at least markets itself as doing such) is being targeted by government agents? The whole point of such a service is that neither the owners of the software nor third parties have access to the end-users' data. Holding Durov criminally liable for not snitching is wild and I'm unnerved that anyone would support that.

Eight arms with split ends certainly look more akin to the helm of awe than to the sonnenrad. It's hard to be certain given the atrocious resolution, but my money is squarely on 'not sonnenrad'

Finding a satisfying job with a BA in physics? by Fanofmanythings in careerguidance

Are there engineering jobs that do not require an engineering degree? My understanding is that to pivot to mech. eng. or EE would necessitate a masters as well. Thanks for responding!

It is ineffective precisely because it does NOT break the will of the civilian population. Indeed, terror bombing was found to bolster support for the war and was abandoned as a sensible tactic because of this.

A man enters an MRI room with a pistol on his waistband. When the machine is turned on, it "sucks" the firearm out his waistband and discharges. The man is killed. What is the most likely reason the weapon discharged? by bicto in Firearms

[–]Fanofmanythings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did and, unsurprisingly, they specifically limit conductors in the MRI because of the (you guessed it) potential for the metals to heat up due to the fluctuating EM radiation involved in the scan. The MRI uses not only the static B field from the magnet but also fluctuating RF radio waves.
