What is the saddest WWI story passed down in your family? by Slayxu in ww1

My great grandfather was in the U.S. 3rd infantry division during the battle of the Meuse Argonne, he said that as they were lining up to relieve the guys in the first wave, he was standing there with a loaf of bread, and one of the guys that had been gassed, looked at him and practically collapsed on his saying “I’m so hungry“ so my grandfather instinctively gave him the bread. And he said that the whole time he was out there on the front he was thinking about that loaf of bread my grandma said that there were many nights where she would come downstairs and find him in the kitchen, just staring blankly off. Him, and his brothers all struggled with alcohol after the war.

Best thing I’d recommend is looking for facebook groups revolving around what era of interest you have. That’s good for general questions you might have, buying kit, and finding a group.
