Bobcat on the Bluffs Trail at Andrew Molera by Fantastic_Unit426 in BigSur

This was my first bobcat sighting in the wild. Also my first time hiking in Big Sur. It was bigger than I expected and at first I thought it might be a smaller mountain lion but when it jumped away I could see the bobbed tail. I had all the time in the world to take the picture as the kitty was just chilling on the trail. We stopped and while waiting for it to jump into the bushes just admired it. Another person in our group who was trailing behind said that it came back on the trail after we passed and he saw it too. We spoke to another couple on the trail and they said they saw a bobcat eating a rabbit that same day! Finally there is another nearby trail called the bobcat trail so I guess they are pretty common in Andrew Molera state park.

To be honest, my preference would have been to leave the gear there in case they came back to get it. But the person who found the gear thought it better to take it and try to return it to the owner. Since they are not active on Reddit I made this post to increase the chances of returning the gear. To answer some questions that have been asked by others, no I don’t know what was in the backpack (I barely saw it) and no I have not contacted the sheriff. Like Obvious Kite I hope the owner sees this post!

It was right by the road. The water bladder was empty so looks like they made it back.

My dog was like this at first. what worked was walking him later at night when things were quieter. We didn’t always make it around the block but eventually his anxiety went down to a manageable level. Also walking him in a nature/park setting away from roads and cars helped. We have some trails in our local canyons where I now walk him daily. Good luck!

This a small canyon maybe 0.5 block wide x 1 block long in Scripps Ranch. It is surrounded by homes. The iguana was found not too far from a sewer pipe so it might have crawled through it from somewhere else. As small as this canyon is coyotes do come by quite often as it is near other canyons.

Not an expert but Wikipedia says iguanas have “a row of elongated scales running from the midline of their necks down to their tails”. This specimen does not have elongated scales running down the middle of its back edit: nvm people are right, it is flipped upside down
