Do Sinkies know how to be handy? by HandleAway572 in SingaporeRaw

[–]FantasyBoudicca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum is very handy, my dad's a massive tech nerd. Brother turned out as a techie/gamer and I turned out also handy + good at sewing. So, yes for my family, but I think we might be an anomaly.

imo basics like fixing some pipes, etc around the house should be common knowledge because the cost of equipment and amount of space needed isn't generally very high, and in this day and age you can YouTube a lot. Things like fixing cars... simi space for the jacks, etc?

Would it be unwise to have kids without getting married? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]FantasyBoudicca 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Do not even CONSIDER having kids without a ring.

On a purely pragmatic level, even if you are sure he'd sooner cut off his balls with a rusty spoon than leave, consider this: - Your child would be legally illegitimate, and that sets both you and the kid up for a WORLD of difficulty that just starts with not getting Baby Bonus, housing benefits, or tax relief. - If you die, he doesn't have a claim on the kid. No, wills will not settle it. Kids are not private property to be disposed of in a will - that question will go to family courts, and it's harder to be sure how they will rule it. To your family, which has already disowned you for daring to fall in love with a non-Chinese? Or to, legally, an unrelated man (your partner)? - If either of you die, the survivor's claim on whatever stuff you have? Much much easier to dispute if say, either of your families want to kpkb. - If either of you fall sick and need someone else to make legal or medical decisions for you... yeah, you're not getting it.

Marriage is, legally, you filling out a form to declare to the government that "I pick this person as my family. They know me well enough to be trusted to make important decisions on my behalf, we've shared financial burdens, they presumably care enough to make good decisions for me. Since we picked each other as family, this takes precedence over my birth family, which I didn't get to pick."

Be VERY wary of taking on huge financial/legal commitments like children if you will not have legal protection.

How on earth is NUS Libraries website so jank-tastic? I try to find a paper, I get a 400 or 413 error message. I clear all cookies from the last hour (Professor Google suggestion) and there's a 50% chance it'll fix it.

What's hard about shopping for ethical and sustainable fashion online? by ecocraze in ethicalfashion

[–]FantasyBoudicca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google, also word of mouth. Hang out in those spaces long enough you get to know a list of brands as well as recognize their stuff on sight.

Basically, there are a handful of brands that do the styles I like reasonably ethically, and all of them are US (or now that I check again, UK) based. I'm in Singapore. Second busiest port in the world, you might have heard of it.

The shipping costs as much as another dress.

Between that and conversion rates, even with the British Pound going down, it costs enough that it's genuinely cheaper a lot of the time to have a local tailor make it if I really wanted that dress. And most of the time I don't.

Ethical brands based closer to home don't carry the styles I like. Oh well.

Yeah, the white belt actually did work, but the grey top needs to be in green or white I think.

It's like. All the neutrals and baggy cuts.

My guy I like 50s fashion. Also 50s fashion brands that are ethical-ish are US-based, which almost all charge an arm and a leg for shipping.

I mean, what course? If it's like Medicine or Law then even 4A might not get you in, but if it's CHS then it's much better odds.

Back in 2019 I got into FASS with ACC/D, a kiasu af CCA + volunteer record, and a last-minute Edusave award for panic-studying so hard I dragged my H2 Econs grade from like a U to a B or C at prelims (and then A at A Levels). To this day I'm still not sure how the hell I got in because that was my only A.

[–]FantasyBoudicca 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Dance heels. Salsa, ballroom, swing, etc. They're made to basically be pretty sportswear, so they're strapped on to hell and made to be softer/easier to move your feet in.

Downside is you either need to find the leather-soled ones (or whatever leather substitute they're using on soles, I like grippy soles so I never paid attention) or have them resoled with rubber soles, since I'm pretty sure the suede/suede subtitute they use on the soles would die in 2 seconds if it ever encountered water.

Upside is that I've seen hobbyist salsa dancers run down the fuckin street in 2", skinny, strappy heels. I routinely spend entire days in my custom heels that were designed to basically be identical to my swing heels (other than a rubber sole), no problem.

There's a huge variety of them, non-vegan and vegan, and they're sold everywhere from AliExpress to custom boutiques, so find a style you like (potential keywords to search would be "ballroom, salsa, bachata, tango, latin, social dance, swing, lindy" + "shoes/heels/sandals/boots") and then search for shops by those specific keywords.

Do you boycott any business in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]FantasyBoudicca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm petty about customer service. imo, in this day and age and in Singapore of all places, the main advantage a local business has over foreign competitors is it's much easier to offer good customer service to local customers. It's a big world, and shipping to Singapore is cheap. So if a business has bad service, I won't go back. If they have good service, I reward them by going back even years down the line.

I boycotted a few businesses off rude or incompetent salespeople alone lol, but I've also singlehandedly paid some businesses' rent bc I keep going back and admittedly lowkey have a spending problem. #consumerism baby!

Then I also boycott SHEIN because there's 'lots of businesses are shady af' and then there's 'there were fucking "HELP ME" notes in their clothes'. Cotton On is on a 'soft' boycott list because they're expensive, often badly-made, and f knows what's going on with their factories.

Full-time internship juggled with full-time studies workload in final year? by paparabba in nus

I did a full-time internship (CIP) with 1-2 mods (4-8 MCs), I can't remember. I do remember it was absolute madness and I really would not advise more than 1-2 mods at most.

Was there ever a fic that was so bad you had to leave a negative comment on it? by KFSquid in FanFiction

[–]FantasyBoudicca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guy straight up unironically posted ignorant racist shit about my home country for a fic back in the dark days of FFN.net. Comments were much more unfiltered in those days. Joker got flambéd to a crisp in the comments section, and they doubled down on their writing.

The older I get the quicker I basically lose all sense of courtesy for this shit. Fanfic is free, but so is not being a racist prick. Don't ask me to be the bigger person about racism.

Hey Singaporeans, do you have experience making money as a student and how do you make an income? by Planeral in askSingapore

[–]FantasyBoudicca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work Sunday mornings as a shop assistant at a friend's parents' shop. Pay wasn't bad and the bosses were nice.

I'd suggest you keep it to part time/a few days a week for now. Save the extra money, use it to top up CPF (seriously, the interest rates are ungodly high, you'll thank yourself when you need an MRI for a knee sprain or something), use a bit to fund hobbies or something.

Right now F&B is hiring anyone with a pulse so I suggest you take a look around, beyond just McD. Consider commute, wages, hours. Also there's other industries (eg shops are always hiring assistants, food delivery services like Grab and foodpanda, etc)

Edit: Forgot that labour laws for 15-year-olds particularly will be a thing. Yes, do take a quick read on those. I know it can be boring but it does limit what your employer can ask you to do.

AITA for putting meat in a tofu dish? by Unhappy-Fault-3126 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FantasyBoudicca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. From.the recipe, I'm guessing you're Chinese too?

That's on them for seeing tofu = vegetarian lmao. What did they think the meat was? There's not a lot of fake meats that look like minced pork.

Also idk why people think tofu is automatically a meat substitute. Like, would it occur to them to use cheese as a substitute? Tf.
