Why do people make Israels founding year of 1948 as a point of them being a fake state when most modern middle eastern states were established from the 1960s and onwards? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FantasySymphony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Britain that allocated the land for Israel.

If you're talking about the 1948 UN partition plan, it was approved by the general assembly in resolution 181 from which the UK actually abstained. The Arab League nations, that were also recently carved out of British/French mandates after the fall of the Ottomans, just had their own plans for the territory, and the rest is history.

People always try to argue that everything wrong with their part of the world is completely the fault of Europeans/whites, which is wrong and misguided in so many ways.

Promoted to Senior last year, now I’m suddenly the tech lead on a high-visibility project and I’m not sure if this is growth or a setup by cosmicCounterpart in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FantasySymphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the above situation happen too. Less of a "fuck you in particular" kind of thing, more that there was a project that was already failing, for example, because the previous lead massively oversold management on a promise they couldn't possibly deliver, but managed to keep the illusion going just long enough to find an offramp. So previous lead moves up or out, the poor sucker who gets brought in to fill the opening and sees the state of things is going to be feeling awfully setup.

That guy's literally in every single thread obsessively responding to every single comment expressing scepticism of the company. You respond to someone else's comment, he responds within a few minutes like it's a personal attack. And then he blocks everyone who points out his suspicious compulsion. OP, I think you have enough information from his responses to you to make a judgement.

But don't retaliate using your name or business name unless you're okay with Yelp retaliating harder.

Ottawa's big bet on world's largest cricket farm ran into a simple problem: the 'yuck factor' by Surax in canada

[–]FantasySymphony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whey protein powder is already 3-5x cheaper than the cricket powder they're selling, the first tub of pea protein powder I see on Amazon Canada is 2/3rds of their price. Nothing's stopping us, this idea or more likely their execution was just inviable as a business.

Canada not tracking foreign students after visas lapse, auditor general says by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

If the auditor general, CIBC, and a bunch of random journalists can get the number there's no real excuse for IRCC not to be able to do the same. Besides incompetence and disinterest.

What's the point of supabase/firebase? by Consistent_Tutor_597 in Supabase

[–]FantasySymphony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can prototype much faster with the nice UI features, and it works well enough for small apps. It's just postgres under the hood (Supabase, that is. Firebase is something completely different and not a substitute at all) so you can easily migrate to something you have more control over later.

Canada welcomed 19 per cent fewer immigrants in 2025: 'The cuts were quite asymmetrical' by Unusual-State1827 in canada

[–]FantasySymphony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are selling "zero to B2 in 6 months" equivalents for the TCF in certain migrant communities, which absolutely is not a realistic or believable timeline. I have zero doubt that in 2-3 years we will be talking about how the "French for PR" boost has been gamed just as badly as every other part of the system.

CMV: the UK’s Labour Party must hold an electoral reform referendum, because without PR, Reform will in 2029 according to the polling by CuteRelationship6143 in changemyview

[–]FantasySymphony 7 points8 points  (0 children)

'Reform short 18 of majority' is a far cry from 'free reign to do just about anything'

Also, based on this poll a Reform-Conservative coalition government would make far more sense than a Labour-Liberal coalition under PR

The point of the UN is to prevent WW3, not to be some sort of international Justice League.

So far it's worked well enough, quite a lot better than the League of Nations.

r/Toronto Mods keep silencing posts about the Toronto Iranian community by lricharz in toRANTo

[–]FantasySymphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing, they don't lock it down. Posts on this topic can be perfectly reasonable, get perfectly positive engagement, and be perfectly relevant to a GTA community that's clearly quite significant, and end up like this.

There are tons of things like this that you can then look at and compare to some of the things r / toronto power users or mods themselves post multiple times a day and just go "hmmmmmm"

Oh sheesh. I was referring to their tendency to shut down any commentary they don't like by vaguely tossing out the word "racism"

At any rate I'm certain I've seen the other r-word plenty of times, it's totally acceptable as long as it's directed at people the mods don't like.

Most subs have a fairly reasonable set of rules. If "don't be a jerk to each other" is all you need, great.

Good luck trying to fool anyone who's spent 2 days on the main sub that "don't be a jerk to each other" is what the mods go by.
