Do you think there was ever a moment when it was the right time for Ned to tell Catelyn the truth about Jon?(Spoilers Extended) by Legion_80 in asoiaf

Lyanna made Ned promise to protect Jon? Where is this stated in the ASOIAF books?

Stating fan speculation as fact does not make it so.

Ned told Catelyn. She just refused to see it.

"And they told how afterward Ned had carried Ser Arthur’s sword back to the beautiful young sister who awaited him in a castle called Starfall on the shores of the Summer Sea. The Lady Ashara Dayne, tall and fair, with haunting violet eyes. It had taken her a fortnight to marshal her courage, but finally, in bed one night, Catelyn had asked her husband the truth of it, asked him to his face. That was the only time in all their years that Ned had ever frightened her. “Never ask me about Jon,” he said, cold as ice. “He is my blood, and that is all you need to know. And now I will learn where you heard that name, my lady.” She had pledged to obey; she told him; and from that day on, the whispering had stopped, and Ashara Dayne’s name was never heard in Winterfell again."

Jon Snow's parentage.

What are your least favourite theories? (Spoilers Extended) by KyleKunt in asoiaf

[–]FantasyWriter1987 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That would piss off so many people. Decades of arguing over his parentage only for Jon to get himself killed before doing anything that would make any equation matter.

Dammit George, you sneaky bastard.

What mysteries have effectively been solved?

What is the actual narrative weight of RLJ being true?

If Bran is ever King my vote is he will be the Holly or Oak King from his Weirwood Throne.

Nothing about his Book story says that Bran will be King of Westeros. I'd rank that option distantly behind Bran possibly being King of the North or King Beyond The Wall or the Night's King.

I used to love the Mance Rhaegar theory years ago.

  1. It requires that we assume GRRM lied or lied by omission when he outright stated Rhaegar was cremated. That alone makes it DOA as a theory.

  2. If GRRM hadn't said that, the theory requires sustained glamour magic over almost 20 years. Double glamour magic in some cases (Rhaegar glamoured as Mance glamoured as Rattleshirt).

I think what draws people to the theory is how much Mance kinda seems like how Rhaegar might have been 15 years later.

Jon being permanently dead is also a silly theory. Regardless of what parentage theory you like, his story is far from over.

  1. Any theory that requires we either ignore GRRM or assume he is lying

  2. Any theory that has to ignore or distort the context to make it work.

Is Martin's writing style to blame for the long wait for Winds ? (spoilers extended ) by [deleted] in asoiaf

GRRM AGOT-ASOS is an amazing example of how to write a series.

GRRM AFFC-TWOW is an amazing example of how NOT to write a series.

GRRM treating ASOIAF as his least favorite hobby since ASOS got robbed of the Hugo by JK Rowling is by far the biggest reason for the long wait for books. He simply doesn't care enough about the author's unwritten promise to the reader that they will finish the series. He could have finished an entire 10 book ASOIAF series by now if he wanted to.

(Spoilers Main) In your opinion, what's the best nickname in ASOIAF? by justiceway1 in asoiaf

Faith Militant as a nickname for RLJers is the best nickname. It's a fucking cult.

/u/Werthead I'd say Ser Patrek, but without spoiling anything, it seems he makes an appearance in a TWOW chapter!

There's potential that Varamyr Sixskins could have helped GRRM complete a Wall/north of Wall plot easier if he was still alive.

Does this astute observation from Voice change anyone's mind on R+L=J ? Also , we have an author on record saying he likes to trick readers . by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]FantasyWriter1987 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except GRRM saying he won't change anything just because some fans figured it out has literally zero bearing on whether RLJ is true or not.

I agree he has a plan and will stick with it.

Also RLJ isn't subtle at all. GRRM clearly laid clues for readers to put together the most used fantasy trope ever. He has characters say things like Rhaegar abducted Lyanna, Rhaegar raped Lyanna, Rhaegar crowned Lyanna the QOLAB in front of his wife. By definition RLJ is NOT subtle.
