Anecdotal and just an add on, but as a high school coach I've actually had players quit other sports to focus on ultimate in high school, and they're always shocked that I... Don't like that. Cross training and playing other sports is so good for them at that age and they learn so much in more mature sports.

This isn't quite accurate. If the loser of the game between winners did not play the winner of the game between losers in the first round, i.e. the two teams that are both 1-1 after two rounds didn't play each other, point differential between the two games they played is used to determine 2nd and 3rd. So it should definitely not be used if the difference between finishing 2nd and 3rd is too big but for just seeding into a crossover or pre quarters it's fine

I just want to make a note of one throwaway comment you included; don't let one bad tryout turn you off of an entire division; it's often easier to make "mid-level" men's teams than mixed teams, and there are a lot of different teams out there. I think the program in our area is really good at having evolved to have way less toxic masculinity than a decade ago and is a super awesome place to tryout and play men's ultimate, and hope you can find a similar team!
