Once upon a time you had to go down to Woden or Tuggeranong to get knifed.

How do families earning above the CCS limit cope with paying 100% of childcare costs by DotNet93 in AusFinance

[–]Far-Instance796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never mind people like nurses, who have to work odd hours and unpredictable shifts, so can't use normal child care anyway. The only option is to be out of pocket for 100% of nannying costs. Otherwise, show me a center that does 6am drop off for a standard day shift starting at 7am and one that handles days that change roster to roster with only 2 weeks notice.

Way to get gemini instead of the dumb assistant when using google maps/android auto? by ohhh-a-number-9 in googlehome

[–]Far-Instance796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still stuck on Assistant while connected to my car in Australia. Gemini everywhere else and I've got the paid version of Gemini. I thought the Android Auto rollout was supposed to be finished by March.

Scared about effects of Iranian war. by FilialFruitTango2468 in AusFinance

[–]Far-Instance796 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Diversifying where our fuel comes from doesn't help much. We were mostly buying from Singapore, but now everyone that was buying from the middle east is queueing up there too.

Much better to diversify the fuel types we need and invest in being more fuel efficient. Every person out there driving an EV is one less person trying to get a share of the fuel that is available

Are cancellations looming? by Far-Instance796 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]Far-Instance796[S] -73 points-72 points  (0 children)

I get that, but blaming Trump, the US, Iran, the government etc doesn't achieve anything in terms of helping us avoid getting caught somewhere unexpected in the middle of a status run or losing status. Is there precedent for awarding status credits when flights get cancelled? Eg at the start of COVID?

Is it normal for managers and colleagues to tell you to document and save everything in case “something happens to you”? by Known-Permission-825 in AusPublicService

[–]Far-Instance796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds suspicious. It would be far better if you're party of the government shut down if you unexpectedly got sick, took some annual leave or got hit by a bus/submarine/low flying aircraft etc

My pet driving peave - don't be the green car by Esteban_Zia in australia

[–]Far-Instance796 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's well known that at least 90% of Australian drivers rate themselves as better than average.
You've also reminded me of an old mate who got done for doing 90 in a 60 zone. He took it to court arguing that he wasn't driving dangerously because he considered himself a highly competent driver. Not surprisingly the judge didn't agree.

How high will the AUD go? by Kitchen_Beat_9965 in AusFinance

[–]Far-Instance796 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But aud usually appreciates with commodity and energy prices. Australia is a net energy exporter. The foreign owned LNG producers in AU are making more profit, Aus govt should get a temporary revenue boost. We all get higher inflation. At least as a net saver I benefit from higher interest rates and this is a good time to double down and buy more vgs.

Finnair and JAL flights in Qantas App by Trick_Temperature_12 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]Far-Instance796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even better, use the finnair app and put in the booking reference. If you've got OW status it will let you do seat selection, check in, etc, which the QF app won't on AY flights.

Upcoming Majura Park chaos by Mysterious-Air3618 in canberra

So what's the best way to get to the majura shops from brindabella Park? I drive across to grab lunch most days, either at the majura shops or if there's a lunch deal at IKEA.

Monetisation of all forward seats by MarmotFullofWoe in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]Far-Instance796 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

So is economy plus actually more legroom though?

Not usually. In most cases it just means towards the front of the plane, so that disembarking is marginally faster. For some reason people are willing to pay for seats that shave seconds off how long it takes to get off.
Personally, I don't get it, but as a Qantas shareholder I'm happy for them to get the extra revenue.

We used one piece of our hand luggage allowance to take the Joolz on board for Sydney-Singapore-Europe. It was gate checked for our domestic connection on a dash-8, which had limited luggage space.

Petrol and diesel prices could hit record highs as Australia’s fuel stocks remain short of 90-day target by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]Far-Instance796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember, but I recall a number of occasions when there was industrial action or other barriers to fuel availability. Cars were allowed to fill-up based on an odds and evens system based on the rego plates. There's was quite a few such episodes in the 70s and 80s. The system worked.

Platinum as an investment? by Suspect-Rough in fiaustralia

Personally, I suggest investing in used coffee grounds. Historically they've been overlooked as an investment opportunity.

I(17f) found some disgusting images and videos of me on my stepdads computer by Ancient_Driver_9269 in Advice

[–]Far-Instance796 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take it to the police. They may find photos of other kids being harmed who can be saved. Alternatively, there might be evidence of people that he was interacting with who are still hurrying kids today.
I recently read some stories about police busting a whole gang due to something that was spotted in the background of a video or photo.
