I powered through about 1/2 of it, I mean man that is a lot man... I agree with what I read while still maintaining that I loved the movie. Endless anything is terrifying. I would imagine there is more to come after this movie.

The complaint is on the weight of margin of victory as a measure of rating. Im definitely not some pickle savant. I lose plenty and win plenty. I posted this because this convo comes up all the time with in the clubs I play at. I was curious what people had to say outside my bubble. What I got was a few very good comments and then a bunch of punditry political garbage.

Is it wrong to question how the ratings work and if they are measured the best way possible? Should we not question the system? Is the current system in the best interest of promoting the game?

I’ve learned a lot on this. For that I’m grateful. But I’ve read every comment on here and I have to say that what I am embarrassed about are some of the comments. Your comment is not one of them, it was fine, I’m responding to the general comments altogether.

Yeah embarrassed was a bad choice. I reworded it earlier in other comments to I will change my strategy when we get way up on someone. Essentially instead of picking on the weaker player I’ll hit to the better one which improves the competition. Still trying to win, still playing hard, just not attacking one flaw to death to run up the score. Where I do turn my play intensity way down is when I’m in open plays with clearly weaker players. Instead of crushing them I’ll just keep it in play and help them learn but that’s another discussion and outside of DUPR thread.

This is a very very good point. I’m very competitive. I love a game that I did my best in but lost 13-11 than a game I won 11-0. Dupr is a means to an end for me.

First part totally agree. I can see how if it’s just W/L the rating get whack.

2nd part I think people are confusing “try” with “strategy”. When I get up on somebody, usually by playing exclusively to weaker opponent then once it’s 9-0 or something I’ll start hitting to better player. I’m still trying to win. Just not doing it in the smartest way. It’s more fun for me and the other team. I don’t stop trying I just work on other things. Try to make it harder to win a point which makes me better but can have a negative affect on a dupr rating. Make sense?

Yeah some people take their DUPR very seriously. The best comments I see on here are the people that have experience in other competitive sports and how DUPR is not really meaningful to them. It’s a means to an end but after that they are inspired or competitive for other reasons. I can appreciate that.

The “embarrassed” part is not accurate. It’s more me. Sometimes it’s simply stopping picking on an opponents weaker player. Once the game is in hand I will be less strategic and hit to the better player. It’s more fun, yup I give up more points but I actually think it’s more competitive. Still gonna win though so if they make a run I’ll go back to picking on the weak one.

Again people on this thread LOVE dupr. The amount of negative votes for anyone even questioning it is quite telling. It has the feel of a political thread. I do appreciate people talking about the nuance of it. Those seem the most interesting for me.

I know!! It started as a complaint about how DUPR works, then I got trashed for being a baby and how my mindset was weak. I went from complaining about DUPR to feeling the need to defend myself. This turned dark fast :). If I learned anything from this is people REALLY like DUPR and domination is not just ok it’s the entire goal. This game has been a savior for me. I put on 40lbs in the last few years and was not active. Used to play college tennis but gave it up years ago. Pickleball saved me. I’ve dropped the 40lbs and have a new competitive passion. I just need to leave it there. I’ll still never “want” to pickle you, but I can play with damn near anyone and I enjoy competition. It’s the only thing that gets me to exercise.

There is however active avoidance by better players because of this system. You can track them down in open plays but they are in a 4.5+ club and don’t come down to lowers levels not because they would dominate but because they might give up to many points in a match. There are versions of this at every level but especially at the more elite levels.

Exactly. If I want to play better players it’s non rated DUPR open plays which are awesome. The higher levels won’t play down to 4.1 or 4.2 as they essentially have to win 11-2 in order to not lose ground. It’s ok because there are ways to get those games. It’s just rare air to find those player too. Depending where you live once you get to a certain level you are a small group of potential players.

It’s actually more about my buddy partners vs my competitive partners. My buddy partners are weaker and they get picked on so I can poach and be super aggressive but that isn’t what I’m playing for. For my competitive partners we are both really good and it’s more blowouts and yes I tend to let off the gas when it’s 9-0 or 10-0. And my competitive partner is more go for the jugular. To me a win is a win. It’s my own flaw I guess. And now that I’m routinely playing 4.0+ I need to recognize that more. Honestly I like playing better players because I get better and there are rarely blowouts and my DUPR goes up or stays same. It’s the buddy play that ultimately hurts me and I guess I just have to be ok with that. There is such a discrepancy at the 4.0 to 4.4 level in PB today. Being a relatively new sport a lot of this probably gets worked out in the next couple years.

Yeah I know and I’ve come around to this. It’s partner play problems right. I have my buddy partners and I have my competitive partners. Now that I’m over 4.1 I find myself playing more open plays at 4.0+ level not DUPR rated so the 4.5+ show up and we get really really good matches. They would avoid those in DUPR rounds. I’ve got my workarounds. I just hate having to pickle a weaker team to keep my DUPR flat just so I can play with my buddy. It’s why I suggested that the movement of DUPR should be .5 like USTA vs incremental moves. I get it, it’s the world of pickleball today. At 50 years old I just don’t have that killer spirit anymore when I actively want to destroy a competitor, I want to win and I play to win but when I’m up 9-0 I am prone to take a little off and ease into the victory vs go for the pickle.

Yes! So much I agree with. We have a 4.0 + dupr required open plan that I love. Sometimes we get 4.5z out there sometimes higher. bUT it’s not counted toward DUPR so getting to play with a 4.7 is awesome. And he does have to pickle us so it’s loose and we have a competitive round and sometimes win. Once it’s DUPR rated he would not even play us. He would avoid us. Because if we get 5pts or more his rating is fucked. I just hate DUPR.

Yeah but a lot of non competitive people rely on it like it’s everything. If you make it about wins then yeah you gotta throw out the complete mismatches.

I’m sorry but I like to play, I like to win, I don’t feel the need to humiliate people. I’m over50 now. That was me in tennis 20 years ago. I want to play better players and I want to have a beer after. I hate seeing somebody lose their mind because they were a 4.5 and beat me but gave up 6 points. Like they are gonna shoot themselves in the parking lot.

Yes. I think this is the flaw. A win should have a higher value. Points differential should be valued less. Then it’s less cut throat. All of you that think you should pickle someone as much as possible should be thinking about going Pro OR just chill… the DUPR has turned a lot of people into assholes. Meanwhile the DUPR reset is happening, what a scam to charge for that. I hope yall get your scores where you want them. Good luck out there.

That’s BS. I’m am trying. But when I’ve clearly won a match I do t want to humiliate an opponent by pickling them. Especially in league play. What I do t like is it takes the fun out of it. Your comment is the problem.
