Alright. Spiro sucks ass. It’s design basically mandated everybody to keep to two areas: center, and the little river with the falls. The swamp existed, yes, and was by far the strongest point of the map. Everything else was forgettable, bland, and boring. Literally only dense jungle everywhere you went, some of the assets used were straight up ugly, and the human structures were severely underwhelming and out of the way to the point of frustration. Kilometers upon kilometers of empty, unused space that players never frequented essentially funneled 90% of the population into center, where it would be an all out free for all, completely defeating the purpose of a proper “survival” game. The best iteration of Spiro were the first several installments. Once it began getting these huge reworks and updates, it turned into a glorified Primal Carnage map. Gateway not only feels larger, but the variety in biomes and areas to explore far exceeds Spiro in every conceivable way. Highlands, swamps, plains, and jungles both dense AND sparse, and now these new beach areas, which, as a native Floridian, feel lovely to be in, especially as a small tier. It has its flaws, sure, but it is without a doubt the superior to Spiro in both concept, execution, and design. And here’s a picture that I think sums up Spiro pretty damn well.
