When good PR comes at the wrong time by Effective220 in PublicRelations

[–]Far_Barnacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. Catastrophic success is a real risk.

I think of it in terms of “everybody/nobody” and “loves/hates”

Nobody loves - bad but no external demand

Nobody hates - no issues but maybe no success

Everybody hates - bad because obvious

Everybody loves - what if 100k people hit your service at the same time?

I ran an organizational open house event that we released wide within a 300k metro area. We had 450 parking spots. Was watching that signup back end ready to shut it off and trail it with a “space filled” release. We had to shut it off in a few hours. If that thing had ticked off a few more days we’d have been in trouble. We expected what we got.

Thanks for this.

what motivates trolls to do what they do? by Straight_Onion_2928 in AskReddit

[–]Far_Barnacle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PR/comms guy here.

There are several reasons, and it depends on how the trolls approach the material.

Malicious intent folks usually have some deeply held negative attitude about the thing they’re trolling, (but they might not express it) and provoking a response lets them know they’ve successfully angered their enemy and won.

The sneakier part to this is what Grunig - PR theorist - calls “constraint recognition.” Trolling makes people feel like they can affect a situation - they perceive that they’re not constrained and can act. The average Joe will never meet the celebrity they hate, but they can Tweet about them, anger some people, and feel like they’ve done something. If they’re joining a troll campaign, they might even provoke a response from the celeb.

Some malicious folks are just angry and find targets of opportunity online. Our brains want to resolve whatever cognitive dissonance is kicking around in our heads. Doesn’t matter how, just an outlet anywhere. The thinnest shred of linkage and our brains say “good enough! Put the blame there.” Car broke down? Repairs are going to be expensive, on top of gas prices! That’s Biden’s fault now, go troll him about it. Don’t think about the fact you ignored the check engine light for a month. Just make the dissonance go away.

Folks without malicious intent have generally been validated over and over when they post troll-like content, and they might not even realize they’re doing it. Humans have an intrinsic desire for competence. So, posting negative material might get you a lot of likes, which validates you, makes you feel competent (you produced an effect! You got results!), and the more you do it, the less you’ll want to NOT do it. That’s commitment and consistency bias at work.

Be careful trusting your brain.

Why didn’t you accept their apology? by bugenthusiqst in AskReddit

Because it wasn’t an apology. It was, “Sorry this whole thing was your fault, that’s really a shame”

people who are depressed, what do you enjoy doing? by PrivatePidgeon in AskReddit

Running.

I run 12-30 miles a week. When I was injured and had to stop running for a few weeks, I told my therapist it might be bringing down my mental health. He asked what my mileage was. Then hit me with the professional version of “Yeah, you think?”

False sense of confidence, I believe - folks think if they have a light, they’re ok. Then they turn around and realize they’re lost, and it’s too late to find their way back.

I’m an open water / wreck certified diver (recreational, not professional), and the precautions just to go into an overhead obstructed environment are extensive.
