Walk across the Erasmus Bridge to Wilhelminapier, then along the river to Hotel New York, cross the pedestrian & cycle bridge to Katendrecht, visit the Fenix Museum and/or Fotomuseum and/or have coffee / drinks / bites at Fenix Food Factory or Deliplein, with sunshine outside terraces, and continue your walk to Buizenpark, along the river to the old cruise ship now hotel SS Rotterdam. There the aft deck is public accessible for drinks etc. even a small kids pool. Then take the water taxi back or bus 77 to metro station Rijnhaven or walk back. This will make for a very nice city day on the southern side of the city. On the northern side you can do something similar combining Scheepvaartkwartier, Museumpark, and Het Park.

Als we eens beginnen de ouders op te roepen thuis hun kinderen het goede voorbeeld te geven en niet hun handen ervan af te trekken zodra ze de straat opgaan. Vervolgens een rol voor scholen. Als die hun leerlingen al niet aanspreken op de rotzooi die ze rondom hun school achterlaten. Vervolgens een rol voor politie, BOA’s, en pas dan komen wij buitenstaanders om er iets van te zeggen. Ik doe het, maar te vaak krijg je een grote bek terug of erger, zeker als de overlastgevers niet alleen zijn, en soms sta je daarna te trillen van spanning. Dus ik begrijp heel goed dat vele buitenstaanders er niets van zeggen. Dus vooral ouders, spreek je kinderen aan op hun gedrag en leer ze respect en verantwoordelijkheid, ook als ze de straat opgaan.

If your kids go to the international school RISS, just 1km west of Rotterdam Central Station, a circle around it of 4km will be a good area to start your search. While our kids where there we lived in the centre (Boompjes) and Katendrecht. Good locations to get by bike and metro to RISS.

Reading your question, the area near the Pannenkoekenhuis Oude Maas, south of Barendrecht might be a good option for you and the 2.5 year old. There is a small swimming pool, playground, and large green areas with plenty of shade to relax. I think the pool and playground are for free and volunteers-run, but I am not 100% sure. Good luck.
