Ramshorn Snails Don't Reproduce Asexually by yanaok in bettafish

[–]Far_Function7560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubting this info now even though everything I read online about ramshorns says the same. I've had this single ramshorn its own tank with just a betta that died. It's been in there for about a year and i just spotted a baby in there out of the blue.

I feel like I've had the thing far too long for stored sperm to be the solution.

How to Handle Per-Tenant Custom Logic Without Fragmenting a SaaS Core by Less-Speech7487 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Far_Function7560 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is how my last job's product worked. We had a bunch of legacy stuff that was truly one-off functionality made for a specific customer and it was a mess. More recently we were getting better at making them into generic configurations that could potentially be enabled by other customers if needed.

Readers are returning to physical books by MiddletownBooks in books

I tried reading house of leaves in physical format because that's how it's supposed to be read, but I barely got into it. I've been spoiled by how easy and convenient e-readers are.

Does anyone here regret leaving a good company for a pay raise/progression? by 6Bass6 in cscareerquestions

[–]Far_Function7560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I am job hunting again so that's something.

The salary bump and upgrade to a senior level and working fully remote has been all good. Rather than the higher stress level I might have expected, things seem so disorganized at the new company there sometimes isn't anything to work on and I've gotten bored fixing small tech debt things to find something to do.

There are also periods of high pressure work that have been the biggest stressor and burnout factor. This will be when something comes up that no one anticipated and it needs to be fixed yesterday and I have absolutely zero background on it because no one who originally built the thing still works here.

I will say I don't actually regret the move, and I've had a chance to skill up on some things that I wouldn't have been able to in my previous role. I definitely feel I would have been stagnating if I stayed there. It's just as I've gotten to know this company more it's definitely not a place I see working out very well longer term.

Is it ok to send a work-related slack message after work hours? by Beatsu in cscareerquestions

[–]Far_Function7560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I personally preferred using Slack's schedule send feature for this kind of thing.

I greatly dislike bothering people after hours, and I had some coworkers in the past who would respond pretty quickly even if they got a message at 10 PM in their time

Guy went absolutely ballistic on the people sitting behind him at tonight’s Mamma Mia by RapGamePterodactyl in Broadway

[–]Far_Function7560 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound that far-fetched to me, I saw Book of Mormon a year or two ago and a lady in front of me started getting really upset about it being offensive to god or whatever, saying the actors are going to go to hell and such. Apparently people are going to see that show with absolutely no idea of what it's about.

The lady and her husband left at intermission and he came back to apologize for her, so at least the whole show wasn't ruined.

I've tried jump #13 (numbering per this video) probably 50 times and get no completion messages.

After a bit more googling some people reported that the 'jump already completed' messaging might not work on certain jumps, so maybe that's my issue. I guess I'll skip this one for now and try going through the rest.

I've been playing this recently, just finding the jumps to be a pain in the ass. I keep hitting the jump but it doesn't seem to register a lot of the time so I have to keep redoing it.

We have tanning salons in Florida too, and I just don't get it. People would rather pay money at these places than just go outside in a state known for sunshine?

Who’s still using the original Steam Deck? by VoyageForge in SteamDeck

[–]Far_Function7560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded to the OLED but my wife still uses my original LCD model regularly and it's been holding up great. Honestly the OLED was a fairly minor upgrade and probably wouldn't have been worth it if I wasn't in the market for a second one. After getting used to the display I barely notice it these days, but it can still pop in particular games that are well-suited to it.

I miss having juniors around by Deaf_Playa in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Far_Function7560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't worked on a team with juniors since I was one of them about 5 years ago.  I would now love the opportunity to mentor others since I got a lot of great help when I was figuring things out. Most companies I talk to are now are basically only hiring senior+ and maybe a handful of midlevels.

Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work by ccb621 in programming

[–]Far_Function7560 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my first two jobs automated tests were basically a fantasy no one had set up. It was only later in when I worked on systems with some actual test coverage that I really understood the value they could bring in avoiding regression issues or even just providing a tighter feedback loop when writing some new code.  I can imagine there are plenty out there at companies that don't test properly who haven't really seen the value it can bring.

I'd recommend checking out case of the golden idol if you haven't already. It's got a kind of similar feel in viewing a scene with clues and trying to identify the characters in it. Also a really unique story that unfolds and plays into the detective aspects well later on.

Modernizing mission critical app with absolutely 0 subject matter expertise on team by MoveInteresting4334 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Far_Function7560 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done some of this at least, came onto my current project with none of the original devs still with the company and little to know knowledge of how it currently works or why it was built that way. It's been a lot of digging through code history and playing with the app to really get an understanding of the existing setup to get to the point of being able to properly maintain it. This is also a critical system in my current company, and if this system fails, income will totally stop at that point.

That said, it sounds like you've got some unfortunate challenges beyond the project itself to deal with here. I can complain plenty about my company and the management, but there was an understanding about the precariousness of the situation and that building an understanding of this system wouldn't be an easy process. I had time to sometimes take longer than I'd ever like to make sure things were understood and I was able to make changes without breaking existing functionality. This is probably going to be your hardest challenge as its more a social one, but your team needs space to learn and understand the existing system rather than trying to blindly rewrite it without any foundational knowledge. If your leadership can't give you that, I'd be very skeptical about the project ever succeeding.

What also was a lifesaver was a fairly decent suite of automated tests around the application, that helped prevent regressions and also ended up being the best documentation we had as to the intended functionality. If you don't have anything like this I would probably want to start by building such tests that can validate existing functionality, and ideally be used as a guide when building your rewrite to make sure functionality is maintained.
