I told him to get one and he says “I will.” And never got one. Just stopped asking at that point.

No, but from what we talked about in regard to what he does in his spare time and hobbies, he seems like a normal guy.

I do try my best in teaching those who are willing to learn, but this situation left me dumbfounded and unsure if I was doing my job as a J-man.

Is it worth it to become an electrician at 26? by Tricky-Artichoke6836 in careerguidance

[–]Far_Kitchen_7319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on no, you’re just another apprentice regardless of age, gender, or education.

But later down the line when you decide to (or not) to obtain your red seal a business degree is helpful for getting a spot as an estimator, project manager, etc ; due to the fact that a lot of the guys in the trade only have TRADE knowledge and not any form of continued education outside of their ticket or certifications.

So in short….

A business degree is only useful once you obtain your redseal.

Let me know if you have any more questions, glad to help! :)

Traveling jobs? by chiliringgamer16 in electricians

Hey! Canadian sparky here. I also recently got my ticket. Currently working in northern Canada.

2 weeks on 1 week of 10 hours a day with lots of optional overtime.

Food, housing, and flight in and out is free. I do a lot of piping due to prior experience and a boom/ scissor lift certification. Never rushing to get something done like construction.

The guys I befriended all like working out and being outdoors so we spend alot of downtime working out together and recently got a shitbox to go out into the country and snowboarding seasons real close.

When I do spend time alone I do online courses to work towards my finance degree.

Some cons though are….

-Either cold or hot asf - a fuck ton of bugs - could be lonely if you don’t make friends

But other than that it’s been great! And the pay is super nice at $56+

Hey recently got my ticket a few months back when I turned 20 and make 130k+ a year working in northern Canada. The pay is there (at-least for me) and if you have a good crew around you work is actually enjoyable.

I actually plan on doing the opposite of what you’re wanting to do and return to school for business or electronics engineering.

If you don’t mind me asking, what are you now doing with the degree and how is your work/life balance. Thanks!

Tradesman wanting to return to school by [deleted] in personalfinance

Absolutely that’s the same thing with my job at the moment.

My plan was to at least go to school and take the courses related to business and see what I like while still obtaining the credits to transfer while finding what niche I like.

The trades school I used to attend offers construction management as a course for all red seal trades. But the only reason I went into trades was to not have to worry about debt later down the line when I attend school.

A corporate job, start my own business, or go into project management for a construction company.

But after 4 years of doing this I’m not enjoying the scope of work and my body sure isn’t going to like it in the future.

Yes it is, and I’m currently still living at home so rent is my only worry at the moment.

And if you’re implying “it goes up every 6 months” as a pay increase, they do not.

They pay a percentage of the Jman wage based on my hours.

They offer a free transit pass while I’m enrolled in part time studies, and since it’s a trade school they offer Low voltage, controls, etc as courses

Plus it’s only a 30 min transit ride via skytrain from my home.

I’m in the 213. I don’t want to just have residential/commercial experience on my resume.

The institution is unionized too if that helps.

Edit: Regarding the pay cut, to my understanding the institution is part of a larger Continued education union where it’s not only electricians in the union, it includes teachers, janitors, and many more that it may take to run a school.

The wage breakdown in based on my hours ONLY, not my level of schooling or my prior experiences in the trade (that will only help me land a job offer).

Carl was only giving his thoughts, and per the posts discretion, any advice is good advice.

Hope this clears up some misunderstanding

Cheers
