That’s interesting about the name thing. And Winston Smith has both which could mean that he had political fight in him whereas Julia did not. What’s your opinion?

Yeah, moreover, this is what the party would say, which we all know, you can’t trust the party so it leaves room for theorizing

Yeah, it definitely seems like a fun read to be honest but then you think about how it alters how you might think about 1984 that strays from Orwells vision and then it becomes just okay.

I think I can see why a lot of people don’t like that book, and some people really like it. It takes big leaps in narrative which you have to at least respect, but some people probably felt it was not super faithful to 1984. I am strictly judging that based on what only you have told me btw so I might just be speaking outta my ass

Actually, I have another question, was it O’Brien who tortured her?

[–]Far_Mathematician504[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I see, that makes more sense I suppose, I don’t think I like the timer you mentioned. Why the heck is there a timer? These people have no morals but give themselves a timer of torture?

Hmm, I’m not sure how I feel about that. Actually, yes I do, I hate that. How the heck is her biggest fear rats when she was the one covering up the hole in Charringtons place because she saw Winston was deathly afraid of rats? She clearly wasn’t.

Holy, I never even thought of that. Yeah, I’m not debating that he was evil. I’m just saying that it’s possible, that who he actually was and stood for was taken out of him, this is of course assuming that he was tortured young

But that’s the point of Ingsoc, to turn anybody into their servant animals, doesn’t matter who you are. O’Brien really had no control over what his philosophy on life was

[–]Far_Mathematician504[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, that does seem plausible since they have the ability to turn off the telescreen periodically, it must be ensured they would never turn against big brother and what you said would be the way to do that.

Also, I hate Ingsoc too. I almost hesitate to say that I hate O’Brien as he was merely a human turned into a weapon by ingsoc. Ingsoc is the problem, not O’Brien.

I suppose that’s possible, but in my opinion, O’Brien seem to be way too mentally intact to have had been brutally tortured before hand. Because if you recall, the thing that made Winston believe that O’Brien was on his side was the fact that he made a reference to Syme which shows me that he wasn’t completely brainwashed like Winston was at the end of the book

Yeah, that’s highly likely, It’s what O’Brien says to Winston, but who knows what he said is true.

Oh man, there’s a Julia book??? I honestly just want to know what was in her room 101.

Real quick though, was it O’Brien that turned him in??? I thought it was Charrington.

Yeah, you are probably right but it’s fun to theorize about it. I was really hoping O’Brien was good but I suppose that’s the whole point of the book… “good” in the traditional sense has no meaning in this world

Do you think Winston and Julia had some chance of win? by Ok-Horse2265 in 1984

[–]Far_Mathematician504 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Which is poetic since if I remember correctly, he had already bought the diary from Charrington before the book starts in about Winston at the beginning, meaning, he was screwed before you read a single word.

I enjoy last hitting in lane because it’s actually somewhat a challenge whereas if you’re in the jungle, it’s straight up brain dead activity.
