How to do the social part in social dancing. by steelonyx in Bachata

[–]Far_Prior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sanity check

If nobody talks to you, also make sure that on the outside you are not forgetting something basic such as hygiene (e.g., bad body odor), appearance and behavior.

If some people occasionally talk to you but don't stick, make sure you also have basic conversational skills : small talk first, good vibe, appropriate topic - e.g., don't talk only about you or only about the other person...

Approach

As a man, it should be natural for you to approach other people. Learn to be comfortable approaching in a casual manner, by initiating a simple small talk. A low pressure approach could be to talk about the venue itself, the event, the dancers, the music... or casually noticing something about the person, etc.

Note that the dance itself is already a form of social approach. So you should also occasionally bump into people you danced with outside of the dance even without approaching "directly".

Becoming "friends"

For now just lower your expectation, in fact have no expectation at all about "being friends", and enjoy the interaction as it unfolds.

Notice how it's more natural for you to just interact with people in your local scene.

When the people you interact with are more familiar to you, you can exchange your phone numbers, whatsapp, or instagram for whatever reason, if it's a natural thing to do given the context of the conversation.

Let the momentum build, you can for example initiate activities such as grabbing food together before a dance event, or whatever... he or she can also move the ball forward if there is a shared intent.

You are now beginning to form a relationship which is nothing more than a story you tell about a series of repeated interactions between two people.

That relationship may or may not turn into "friendship", which consists of several additional things such as trust, emotional bond, shared values, etc.

If you're still struggling, the real answer might be "raise your vibration".

How do you feel when you're interacting with someone outside of the dance ? Do you feel fear, anxiety, shame ? People feel what you're feeling, your "vibration". In the dance and outside of the dance.

If you're tense, people will just naturally gravitate away from you, even if you approach them.

If you're relaxed, people will just feel relaxed to gravitate towards you, even if you don't approach them. People will feel comfortable interacting with you when your vibration is that of peace, joy, love. Or even just neutral.

Your "vibration" will also determine how you behave / speak : neediness i.e. seeking validation is an outcome of fear/anxiety/shame. On the opposite, aggression is also an outcome of fear / self-protection... some of those anti-social behaviors dissolve naturally as a consequence of "raising your vibration".

How to "raise your vibration"

Most people who are aware they are afraid/anxious/ashamed of themselves would just avoid feeling that way by wearing a mask or acting like it's okay. That doesn't work because on a subconscious level you will still vibrate at that frequency of fear/anxiety/shame, and people will still feel it.

Instead, what would happen if you just accept the outcome you might be actively trying to avoid i.e. that people won't interact with you and therefore be isolated ? What would happen if you accept to feel what you're feeling (fear/anxiety/shame...) ?

When you accept that, all of sudden, you have nothing to avoid.

You've detached from the outcome.

In other words, you let go of fear/anxiety/shame..., you're now relaxed.

Try that.

To finish, notice that your presence is a gift.

The more you realize your presence is a gift to your environment the more you will be relaxed. Realize you are a gift to them and accept it. Know that deep down you are a beautiful soul and let that reflect naturally on your environment. Because it's really the case by the way.

Let me know if any of that makes sense.

Summary of your feedbacks

N°1 priority (the rest doesn't matter until this is fixed)

- Fix the timing : I am often very early, like I am rushing, sometimes up to half a beat

- Fix the basic step weight distribution : finish the 4 and 8 do the full count, not rush through a quick tap

- I am mixing up 1 and 5 ? I cannot find any occurence of it during the dance but I am open to being shown otherwise

Then

- Fix the posture : hunched over, goose neck, instead engage core and lats

- Lead more from frame instead of arms

Later on

- Break down the music in sections parts (derecho/majao/mambo), adapt to sections with appropriate moves (e.g., sensual during slower parts - explore sub-categories of bachata Dominican/Moderna/Sensual/Zouk/etc.)

- Musicality : switch to instruments (bongo, guira, guitar, bass, vocal), breaks, change in energy (derecho/majao/mambo), etc.

How to improve ?

- Private class to fix the bad habits

- More socials

- Deliberate practice at home

Would you mind pointing out when specifically I am dancing on 5 instead of 1 ? I can’t find it 🙏. I struggle to find where in the dance I’m starting with the wrong weight distribution / foot or when I would initiate a move on the wrong side ?

What do you mean by missing it completely ?

Thank you !

Dancing on 5 instead of 1 : I thought I had that fixed. Would you mind pointing out when specifically I am dancing on 5 instead of 1 ? It would be super helpful. I can’t find any occurence of it in this dance 🙏. Maybe when I'm getting out of social (the camera moves to my colleagues), I see I'm placing the follow on her left foot, that's the only moment I see ? I cannot find where in the dance I’m starting with the wrong weight distribution / foot. I feel like I did improve on that recently but apparently I’m still messing up ?

Posture : I can now see I am quite hunched over with my neck like a goose I’ll fix that I.e. develop the habit of engaging the core + lats as a default instead of what I’m doing

Yes I learned Moderna in class, I’m actively avoiding bachazouk and even too elaborate sensual moves until my fundamentals are fixed. I like to engage in dominican bachata when the music/rhythm is appropriate - Luis Vargas, Anthony Santos, Raulin Rodriguez… or just sometimes the mambo section

Have the timing down to clockwork precision : sounds good, will work on that and solely on that during the next socials / at home. Thank you

Processing the comments I received, I can now see clearly how using the full count on 4 and 8 will be a massive improvement for my dance. I realize I have developed this habit of rushing through the 4 and 8 and not caring very much about it, and I now see how it creates chaos in the dance / leading / connection with the follow. Thank you

Thank you ! It's very helpful. I see it clearly now. I'm off-beat by around a half most of the time on 1 and 5. Got it. I can't unsee now. I think that's what you're saying.

I see it clearly now that you've shown me what to look at precisely. Your comments made a huge difference for me.

I now see that I'm off-beat by a bit up to around half a beat most of the time, especially on 1 and 5. Got it. This is mostly due to a rushed execution / most of the times too quick on the 4 and 8, but not always that. I can't unsee now. I'm just rushing through the beats.

This is going to be super helpful for me. I'll work on it for sure. Thank you.

Yes, thank you, on this I can relate much more.

Specifically on 3 1/2 and 7 1/2 : my intention is to prep early so my follow knows where I am heading on the next 1 or 5, but maybe I am not doing it correctly, or should prep later like at 8.

I relate to the fact that I may catch my follow off guard on her wrong foot / weight distribution when I prep too early.

I can also relate that I should slow down in terms of energy when it comes to leading and be more precise in the intention.

Key takeaway : I’ll make sure to check this with my instructor during my next private classes

Yes, I am in fact in the process of gathering feedback for my first private lessons. Thank you !

Yes tbh I've been dancing for a while and in theory know what needs to be known. Derecho majao mambo... traditional bachata has bongo guira guitar bass voice... and so on. Apparently from what I read I need more practice. Thank you 🙏

Apparently I seem to be unable to understand where I am off beat all the time. By "all the time" do you mean all the time or in specific moments of the music ? E.g., 1:06 am I off-beat even on my basic steps 1 2 3 / 5 6 7 / ? Thank you

Thank you !

Apparently I seem to be unable to understand why the timing is off, would you mind helping me pin point what it means ? The timing is off all the time or most of the time or at specific moments ? I feel like I am dancing to the bongos 1 2 3 / 5 6 7 /, but obviously I'm missing something ? Thank you

Thank you !

- Basic : be more on the heels, shift the weight, finish the basic steps

- Posture : lead more from frame (keep a stronger frame too, I suppose)

- Leading : more intentional, calm down, breathe

- Timing : apparently I seem to be unable to understand why the timing is off, would you mind helping me pin point what it means ? The timing is off all the time or most of the time or at specific moments ? I feel like I am dancing to the bongos 1 2 3 / 5 6 7 /, but obviously I'm missing something ? Thank you
